"The main contractor, Areva, is building the unit for a fixed price of €3 billion, so in principle, any construction costs above that price fall on Areva. In July 2012, those overruns were estimated at more than €2 billion, and in December 2012, Areva estimated that the full cost of building the reactor would be about €8.5 billion, well over the previous estimate of €6.4 billion."

I saw this joke in a thread somewhere:

Junior engineer: thinks they know everything

Intermediate engineer: thinks they know nothing

Senior engineer: hates computers

meshenna | 5 years ago | on: YouTube accidentally permanently terminated my account

Happened to me a few years ago. Google account got terminated with no explanation. I used it for personal e-mail, watching videos on Youtube and to store personal files on Google Drive. I never posted anything anywhere public, including commenting on Youtube. Since then I've been self-hosting everything I can.

meshenna | 6 years ago | on: What Happens to the Body on No Sleep

Likely it's simply because that's one of the few occasions in modern life when we're not being bombarded with external stimuli. A few minutes of silence and your brain goes: "Right, now's a good time to present this thing I've been working on." Same thing with showers.

Willingness to be vulnerable is necessary in close relationships. Otherwise there can't be a (meaningful) relationship. But being vulnerable by default leaves one open to endless manipulation.

meshenna | 6 years ago | on: A person has died from a vaping-related condition

I think vaping is a genuine improvement, provided that the law treats it like it does tobacco, i.e. no advertising, age restrictions, etc. This is an anecdote, but in countries where those restrictions are in place, just about every vaper seems to be an ex-smoker, and nobody thinks vaping is cool or attractive.

Yeah, I suppose... The post I was replying to just sounded to me a lot like something Epictetus could've said. As in, you shouldn't mind starving if you can't help it.

Now that I think about it, my memory of Epictetus seems to be really hazy, so I probably shouldn't try to discuss stoicism without doing some re-reading and thinking first.
