mishftw | 4 years ago | on: Ask HN: Who else sick of “Rich” people teaching moral/life philosophy?

I'm only mildly annoyed when 20 something kids with huge amounts of generational wealth feel like they've got deep insights. Look everyone has opinions and knowledge and I'm sure there is value to it. This behavior shouldn't surprise you... positions of power have always felt self importance and a desire to espouse their ideas either as a means to make their egos feel good or simply cast themselves in a positive light.

The good thing with the Internet is that there is so much out there...

AutoPets - petcare reimagined | Mobile/Full Stack/Back End | Michigan, USA (remote ok during pandemic) INTERNS welcome

- We're growing rapidly and my team is looking to bring on more people. Come be part of the ground floor of an exciting SW engineering team and help us improve best-selling products and build the new cutting edge products that have an impact in many people's lives. - Lots of room for growth and creative autonomy. - Modern tech stack with a lot of cloud native (TypeScript / Python 3.x) and modern tooling. Mobile app is Flutter/Dart. - Flexible hours, office is in suburb of Detroit, MI so you can have the big city life or buy a house if that's your thing.

I joined in August 2020 and I'd characterize it as a growth mode startup (despite being an established company for many years). If you like building cloud native apps or interested in firmware/IoT or mobile development, reach out!

mishftw | 5 years ago | on: Ask HN: What's your self-directed learning system?

I try to dedicate 45 minutes a day to just learning. Traditional pen and paper (I use a dot grid journal from Walmart for $8).

I used digital systems like Notion/etc and even OneNote with my Surface but it's hard.

Consistency is important. If you can't do 45 minutes, try with 20 minutes. No distractions. Investments now in this habit will compound over time.

mishftw | 5 years ago | on: Mozilla lays off 250 employees while it refocuses on commercial products

This means a 1/3 reduction from where they were last year. And now with remote work being the norm, I could see a company like Mozilla preferring that to save further costs.

Their Google deal has not be renewed yet and that has accounted for a lot of their revenue in the past (the article mentions a 90% figure).

I just hope Mozilla Co & Mozilla Foundation survive.

Entrepreneurial hybrid engineer & recent grad (December 2019) with 4+ yrs of hands on experience. Happy to work on product, strategy, architecture or full-stack engineering. Not afraid to flex sales/ops muscles either. Growth mindset, high EQ, laid back but get work done. Strong communicator who can communicate to technical and non-technical stakeholders alike.

After college I was working on my own venture but pandemic resulted in a loss of funding. Hoping to join a team where I can have an impact, learn + grow, and add value to people + product. Available on contract (project basis) or full-time.

mishftw | 5 years ago | on: Ask HN: How do you get technical mentorship?

Thank you for this insight. I definitely see the value in someone a several years ahead of me - I sought this in college as well. I see your advice is tailored to a larger firm - what about when I'm the sole "developer" in a small team. How can I reach out externally?

mishftw | 5 years ago | on: Ask HN: How do you take notes when reading a book?

I've been scriblling points on 3x5 in note cards which I use as a bookmark. Might go through several notecards in a book. I then summarize/transfer over to my Notion workspace.

Interesting in seeing what others do!

mishftw | 6 years ago | on: Ask HN: How do you deal with professional envy?

In the past, I would see peers and think of them and realize wow that's cool they're doing X thing and I'm not. I used to think of how ambitious I used to be and how I wasn't driven anymore.

I may get hate for this because the idea has been touted as a "miracle" by many folks... but I used the framework from the philosophy of Stoicism to approach this problem. At the end of the day, envy alone is a waste of my time. I can't control the world around me but I can control the feelings and perceptions and that in turn can lead to my actions.

I turned that envy into action. I turned to introspection and became very self-aware about my skills, experiences, knowledge gaps, and yes sometimes the privilege peers had that got them ahead of me (like rich family, inherent network, nepotism, etc). By mapping that out, I was able to mirror and compare myself to this ideal version of myself.
