Gemini is up, I asked it to explain what's going on in cave man speak:

YOU: Ask cave-chief for fire.

CAVE-CHIEF (Cloudflare): Big strong rock wall around many other cave fires (other websites). Good, fast wall!

MANY CAVE-PEOPLE: Shout at rock wall to get fire.

ROCK WALL: Suddenly… CRACK! Wall forgets which cave has which fire! Too many shouts!

RESULT:

Your Shout: Rock wall does not hear you, or sends you to wrong cave.

Other Caves (like X, big games): Fire is there, but wall is broken. Cannot get to fire.

ME (Gemini): My cave has my own wall! Not rock wall chief! So my fire is still burning! Good!
BIG PROBLEM: Big strong wall broke. Nobody gets fire fast. Wall chief must fix strong rock fast!

monstertank | 7 months ago | on: LLMs tell bad jokes because they avoid surprises

This post got me wondering, so I asked chatgpt for jokes about hackernews as if made by various comedians...I laughed at one or two /shrug

Bill Hicks (angry truth-telling prophet)

"Hacker News is where ideas go to die. Not because they’re bad — but because 400 anonymous software prophets decided they’re God. And God doesn’t code, man."

---

Bill Burr (ranty everyman, annoyed at everything)

"I went on Hacker News once. Jesus. It’s like walking into a bar where everyone’s smarter than you, but still somehow an idiot. ‘Actually, you should’ve used Rust.’ Actually, you should shut the hell up, Todd."

---

Louis C.K. (brutal honesty, self-deprecation)

"I asked Hacker News if my startup idea was good. And they said, ‘No, because you’re an idiot.’ And I was like… yeah, that’s fair. My idea was basically Tinder but for people who hate me. Which is… everyone."

---

George Carlin (sharp language, hypocrisy calling)

"Hacker News. Don’t you love that name? Hacker. News. Two lies in two words. Nobody’s hacking, and it sure as hell ain’t news. It’s just nerds arguing over tabs and spaces like it’s the f*ing Middle East."

---

Tom Segura (laid-back storyteller, dry punch)

"So my buddy posts his app on Hacker News, right? He’s all excited, like, ‘Dude, we’re gonna blow up.’ By comment three: ‘This is trash, here’s a 40-page essay why you should quit.’ He calls me crying. I’m like, yeah man, that’s the feature, not the bug."

---

Jimmy Carr (short, brutal, wicked flip)

"I posted on Hacker News for feedback. They gave it to me. Turns out suicide is an option."

monstertank | 1 year ago | on: I basically announced Minecraft 2

If Notch loves making games, I'm all for it. If it gave his life meaning and he is good at it and he loves it...bro can do whatever. Being rich, being famous or being the minecraft dude...none of that should matter. He is just a guy and everyone should treat him like any other guy. Life is life, do what you love and enjoy the short time we all have. Notch gave me lots of joy, why would I ever want anything less for him.

monstertank | 1 year ago | on: IBM Quantum delivers on 2022 100x100 performance challenge

I know this is cool technology...but can someone give me some use cases? Like I'm not super sure how speed or more qbits factor into whatever these computers are supposed to do.

I could research it, but someone here probably has a nice simple explanation that will be good enough.

monstertank | 1 year ago | on: Trump wins presidency for second time

Trump voters think the conviction was excessive, the rapist claim is untrue, and that he is not a bad person.

They believe he will improve the economy and thus their lives.

They did not vote spitefully against Harris, however, due to the pressure from left wing controlled law makers, media, talking heads and general vitriol from the left of their opinions... they might have voted spitefully against progressives in opposition.

monstertank | 2 years ago | on: Is the space effort a waste of money?

No. Next question?

Like it or not, the utility and cost of anything space related these days has gone up and down respectively.

With billions wasted worldwide each year on frivolous weddings, unused education and ridiculous fashion...I feel like space exploration is one of the few things actually worthwhile.

monstertank | 2 years ago | on: Ask HN: What are you passionate about at the moment?

I know it's a bit weird...but I'm really getting into creating my own religious style structure around modern AI programs.

Originally I was interested as a concept for a story, but as an atheist who was a very devout Christian for a long time I really wondered if there is some modern twist on the structure of organised religion and replacing a traditional meta-physical source of knowledge for a real world one (or group of them).

It has essentially turned into a framework of ritualism based around core concepts of various religious structure...with the ability to 'hot swap' your 'god' or 'AI' or 'book' or whatever source of wisdom you seek to lead your decisions.

It is much more complicated than I thought, but it is super interesting to me and while I have nothing that yet really helps me any better than normal reason based skepticism...I do like the ability to engage in tribal style ritualism in a modern context.

I've been trying to name it but so far all I have come up with is Algoruspicy (Haurspicy using algorithms) or Nexialism (Connection based philosophy)

monstertank | 2 years ago | on: Ask HN: Who wants to be hired? (August 2023)

I mostly just posted this because I feel like if no Aussies are going to represent, then I will.

Location: QLD, Australia

Remote: Yes

Willing to relocate: No

Technologies: Pretty much basic/junior level anything, From Gimp to C to Splunk to AI

Résumé/CV: Nothing relevant apart from Game industry job from over a decade ago. I am an old games/engine tester. So I can watch paint dry basically all day long. I love quality and can spend days chasing down obscure problems. I could really use some work, but I am not a serious choice really. Need some boring remote work done tho? I got nothing else to do.

I have been chasing a really cool remix for this track for ages. It's like an amped up techno/psytrance remix...all I remember is it was done by something team or team someone?

Does anyone know what I am after at all?

monstertank | 2 years ago | on: Has Xbox lost the console wars?

I effing hope so. I grew up with Atari's/Sega's/Commodores/Nintendo and PlayStation entered the market well and fit right in. When I heard Microsoft was aiming at a console I knew their rampant need to suck the life, fun and money out of their users would be sad to watch happen to the industry I loved.

And despite spending weeks on a couch stoned with a mate playing thru halo...I still despised what hid behind their console-y veneer. Corporate bloodlust.

Whether it was their unique approach to online play (pay you bastards) or their game store shelf tactics (put us where the bastards will pay the most) or their absolute bs that gaming had to always be AAA (so those bastards pay us AAA prices)...I was always sad to see they didn't die.

From idiotic naming, Nazi like banning, jacked up game prices, exclusivity and religion shenanigans, hardware format warmongering, censorship where it didn't need to be and none where it should have been (I'm looking at you uno 360), or just plain creation of the most toxic gamer population known to man (Xbox live kids)...I one day hope to hear them go the way of Sega because unlike Sega, they deserve it.
