I can second this. I used to selfhost mail and it was a lot of work to keep up. Nowadays I am also quite happy with protonmail but since I got cloudron installed for other services, I just enabled mail there and will see how that goes over the next few months, so far so good. Hopefully I can go back to email selfhosting through that in the long run.

Also I agree, the privacy implications when using a VPS is still something worth taken into account.

At least in those situations wikipedia does not have a single answer, which is what I would have expected for self-hosting as well. Especially given the quite different use-cases of it. That triggered my question.

Ok that is just quoting the wikipedia article, my question though was if that is actually the only correct usage of the term, since searching on google reveals pretty much only what you refer to as "on-premises software". Somehow this is strange to me that so many people are off, thus my question in the first place.

I would say it is the best model we came up with so far, while it being a model with tremendous flaws. It works for humans to gain progress with what we consider as progress, probably mostly growth in wealth and health. The biggest problem is, that it is fully based on exploitation of nature (which includes human beings) so far. That exploitation is unfortunately exceedingly dangerous to ensuring our vision of progress can endure.

Considering the article, I don't think it is useful to for example try to minimize a human footprint. If that is the goal we might as well drop dead to achieve it. The question is more around what kind of footprint it is. Does it allow us and the nature ecosystem to still evolve in a way it works towards our goals or not. The universe will not give a damn about the rearranging of atoms we do, but as we depend on how those are arranged to live, we have no choice to care or not.

Totally agree with turning off all notifications on the phone. This simply makes the phone experience so much better. Knowing you only reach for it when you need it, instead of getting dragged into checking other things while already looking at the screen due to the notification, really calms one down.

I think ownership here is not always bound to making money off it or a third party making money off my content. There are various reasons like control over content as well as privacy aspects, which all play into ownership. So the Author only really does not like someone else making money off of his work it seems.

I have my own reasons (lesser around monetization) and thus I'm hosting some of the webservice I depend on on my own for some time now. Since I am not very much into sysadmin things, I found https://cloudron.io recently which has served me quite well thus far. Looking forwards to eventually get my email on that as well :-)
