on: Potential Presidency for Zuckerberg?
Its people like you who are the problem. What an idiotic statement. Youve clearly never watched a single campaign speech from trump. Youve never investigated or even contemplated how his campaign really worked or the issues of his voter base. You dont understand anything because youve never attempted to view the whole thing objectively. Please just shut up.

on: Everybody lies: how Google search reveals our darkest secrets
What a crock of utter and complete nonsense. If you isolated the simple statements of fact then this article would still be a long and enjoyable read, but instead i am assaulted with corresponding insane ranting; accusations against huge swaths of people that are totally unsupported. So nobody googles if their daughter is smart? Maybe its because parents are worried that looks and not intelligence are important for cohesing in school and not getting bullied, for girls. Maybe the same for boys, but with social quickness and intelligence. Maybe they are responding to the behaviour of the kids themselves, who might openly worry about being smart or ugly; perhaps girls and boys have their own tendancies about which one worries them because of the small fact that they are differnt biologically, and that visual attractiveness is much more important for men? Not a single alternative is explored by this author and it should be no surprise because when you zoom out and look at the whole picture of this article its obvious that this guy is simply using these issues as a tool for popularity and self advancement. Im not saying it shouldnt appear on hn because the phenom of using these issues for personal gain and the death of journalism is in itself an intellectual curiosity. But i will die before letting this shit go uncommented upon.

on: Mark Zuckerberg: Basic income is a bipartisan idea
People talk about whether or not it can be afforded and then point out the dollar coat of living, taxes and so on. Money is not a real thing, its a construct. Its so complicated that nobody here is going to be able to prove we couldnt afford ubi. But rhat doesnt even matter since money is only a framework we use for our markets and economies. Instead of fussing with money figures, which will never do anything besides confuse people, we can look at concrete things instead. The physical and chemical reality of this world. It is undeniable that because of automation, a complete restructuring of our society will be needed. The only limits in such a reorganization are those of the physical world, not those of our current paradigm. So, how much energy is there to go around? How much food and how many materials? What is the maximum amount of any of those things that we might collectively have? What are the limits of physics for how much energy we can harvest from the sun? That is where the conversation needs to begin. And i think we will all find that even with todays technology there is plenty of everythong to go around.

Not really a big deal to be honest. Innapropriate but not enough for a scandal. She was inebriated and she gracefully fails to mention if he was, and he was probably. Its not exactly the next cosby is it?

Your sentimemt is totally wrong. Hydrogen is jusy as dirty as battery technology, you have to produce the hydrogen some way, and producing and expending hydrogen fuel uses far more energy than charging amd discharging batteries.

All they had to do was not spin the story as if this guy figured out something that tesla didnt. There are ample explanations in the comments above. It is a really cool diy project though, and i wish they had written about it as such.
On an unrelated note, i think that whenever a commenter reffers to other comments in general, they should always say "the comments above" instead of simply "other comments" as a way to be humble/polite. It would be a cool form of hn etiquette.

I still dont understand why simple endorsments dont work for some sites. Just put a text banner somewhere prominent that says "thanks bobs burgers for being our sponsor" there is no way ad blockers could pick that text out of all the other text and block it. And there is no reason anyone would want to block it anyway.

on: An alarm about the influence of standardized tests on American society
I dropped in on a physics class at my uni and i was surprised at how poor the students understanding of physics was. These are super sharp people and they struggled with simple problems. Its because they learn in this testing way. They dont actually understand the material. Thats the most direct example of this problem that ive seen. In order to fully understand things like you ought to, you have to take the initiative yourseld on top of studying for tests that are often made arbitrarily hard with memorization and other things of that nature. Most of the college kids i know dont really know anything. And just like this article said, they are only good at gaming the system and advancing their own self interests. There is no big picture. They never wonder how they might be changing society and they never wonder how they might want to shape society. Even my 40 year old room mates dont. Its a death scentence for this country. An absolutely lethal development. I think the recent political developments are only the beginning of things to come due to this problem of apathy.

on: Scientists Tie 52 Genes to Human Intelligence
As i said, given an ideal environment, intelligence is purely genetic. This whole focus on environment is important, because we ought to have it right for our kids, but its like saying that a cars performance is about oil brands and road conditions. No, a better engine makes a better car and developing the engines is exciting and important because we know how to make good oil and roads and once the roads are paved and refineries operating, most of the progress will be understanding the engine. Yes you need roads but being able to understand and possibly select and manipulate genetics associated with intelligence will produce huge, groundbreaking changes that will make the world much, much better.

on: Scientists Tie 52 Genes to Human Intelligence
Ive known people who were related to certain very famous physicists and their intelligence was obviously much higher than most people. As in very conspicuous. There is no doubt thay intelligence is purely genetic. The difference between an ape, me amd my friend is genetic. Yes, environment counts but if you give everyone their own personal most ideal environment, they will all taper off at an intelligence level that is determined by their genetics. There is a popular myth that genetics arent everything when it comes to intelligence because it makes people uncomfortable. They dont want to believe that their own intelligence is deterministic. I think it has to do with the tendency of americans to never tell amyone how much money they make or anything else directly tied to their sense of self-worth. What a massive waste of time.

on: Get your loved ones off Facebook
You could replace this whole article by saying "facebook is a private company and they have all your data, from posting and messaging as well as their cookies". Its just a bad idea at its very core. All these examples are trivial, who cares if they fake endorsements and track your location? Its like building a house out of sand and then people point out that a chunk fell off here or there. Its a house of sand, it was a retarded idea to live in there from the outset, of course chunks are falling off -- the whole thing will be in peices soon. Because facebook is an anxiety enducing and artificial experience, users will start leaving. Users who seem to need facebook in order to stay up to date with their friends, and who seem to have an interest in watching other peoples kids grow up (?) such as the one poster above me (and whos post will inevitably remain above mine) will stay -- but they will be the minority. Kids will stop signing up and at some point there will be a leak and the death of facebooks public image will finally be complete after starting years ago.
