on: Apple Was Right To Kill Flash
I can't wait for sites that jump in your face with unnecessary animation and sound AND render incorrectly depending on browser when doing so.

on: YouTube's thoughts on Flash and the video tag
So if people want to post a video of their cat in their blog, they must encode it in 2-3 different formats, and use an HTML5 video player with a fallback to a Flash video player ... as opposed to a single video file and a single Flash player.
Unless those people who own cats are all Richard Stallman impersonators, I don't see how that makes any logical sense.

Or maybe a loud and clear signal for people to stop assuming they're doing it just because of their beta HTML player.

on: YouTube's thoughts on Flash and the video tag
Interesting that the people whose business model actually rely on video distribution (Hulu, YouTube) have opinions that are the opposite of the common user consensus in Redddit or Hacker News ("Flash is dying", "HTML5 is ready", etc).

on: Ask HN: How do you get more comments on a blog?
1) Write something is so unfathomable wrong that prompts people to respond, correcting you.
2) Write about something that appeals to people's ideologies, and be sure to go against the most popular creed. Examples: "HTML5 is bad"; "Apple is Evil"; anything about how some aspect of programming should be done

Adding to that the fact that their clever semantics is making it
sound better than it is (claiming '4x more pixels' - which is true, but it's just 2x the resolution)...
It's the best mobile device screen out there, hands down. They really don't need to do that.

on: The end of :hover?
This article should be renamed "the end of one-design-fits all." Or maybe, we could rename it "double your design staff."Pretty much spot on. I don't like when people say that one change for a new kind of device will dictate how everything else will be used. Yeah, mobile devices with touchscreen capabilities are here to stay, but that doesn't mean desktops are going away. Designing for the common features between the two only is doing the users a disservice for anything that could benefit from additional UI features.

No, because Google is not /restricting/ it. They're using the advanced features, not being bouncers deciding who to let into their party or not based on the color of their shirt.

From a guy who did many of the examples for chromeexperiments.com and has been a pretty active promoter of HTML5/standards via three.js and other projects:
"I'm happy I rejected doing anything for this apple/html5 page. They should rethink their policy and give credits to the authors."

Shows the hypocrisy of Apple when they're saying you shouldn't need a plugin, but then force you to download a new browser even if it's not necessary.

I think it’s a stretch to say that Jobs is “deciding what content people can view on the iPhone and iPad.”That made me stop reading the article right away.

A bunch of hyperbolic crap. But hey, it says "Fuck Flash!", so this is gonna be popular among the HN/reddits/slashdots of the world no matter how much it doesn't stick to reality.

on: Open Source HTML5 Video Player with WebM/VP8 (from Zencoder, YC W10)
Fullscreen video plays like shit in latest stable Firefox, video has no sound.
Playback is ok in latest Chrome, fullscreen is in-window, so no real fullscreen.
And people say HTML5 is the future now? I just hope those players that have a 'fall-back' to Flash allow you to set the Flash version as the default one.
How do I disable HTML5?

on: On Android Fragmentation
iPhone devices will see fragmentation soon too. iPad has a different resolution, the next iPhone will too. The problems you see with Android today are just problems that Apple is holding on but that will have to be faced in the future - it won't be the same 320x480 device anymore.
The solution - proper placement, scaling, different layout flow methods - have been around for ages, and it's up to developers to employ them.
And because Android devs had to deal with them already, I can't wait to see the barrage of shit that will happen when devs unprepared for it have to deal with the new iPhone resolutions.

Funny metaphor, and very accurate. However, HTML5 is like that same treadmill, only that people still have to build the treadmill itself. It's epic work times two.

on: App Store: Sentence first — verdict afterwards
Not unique, but certainly extremely common. Go check the comments on the page and see for yourself; plenty of comments there saying it looks "widgety" so Apple was right to ban it (even though there has never been anything on the agreement about "widgety" applications). I'd bet this guy would be one of them writing in defense of Apple, had it not been his application the affected one. As long as those people have an excuse, no matter how inane it is, they're gonna stick to it; and I'm seeing more from the Apple camp than any other fanboy camp I've seen before.
I hope this causes more people to look at their own attitude towards Apple and the kind of future it's buying them.

on: Smokescreen - a Flash player written in Javascript and HTML5
Did you run Smokescreen with the same SWF you used in FP? How long was your test, and what was the battery drop in both?
Tell me you're not comparing the decompression and rendering of a video against a simple animation.
