on: A shift in American family values is fueling estrangement
On mobile so I can’t look now, but from what I recall the people who have looked into it (and quite a few have) find that the causal relationship goes in the other direction, at least in the US —- young people have abandoned religion because of religions treatment of homosexuals, women (including access to abortion), and, for white evangelicals, their treatment of racial minorities. Religious organizations in the US have persecuted their culture war at great expense. IIRC they’re currently replacing those lost young people with people who are attracted to their movement specifically because of these various bigotries, so I think they’re holding about even, but given demographic shifts I don’t know how long that will be sustainable.

on: Amazon executives are worried they'll run out of people to employ
Amazon’s demand for warehouse picking and packing is highly seasonal, centered around the American holiday season. I think they do have robots, but it’s still cheaper to hire seasonal humans rather than have a bunch of expensive robots idle for 8 months of the year.
One of those dystopian facts that makes me feel some kinda way.

Oh man, I really want this. Are you collecting email addresses anywhere for when you’re ready for users?

This would be fantastic for households with multiple dietary constraints.

Hey, I’m also very interested in this! Just an FYI, IME using hello@domain or any similar role-based or impersonal email from an unproven domain OR while using a service that lumps you in with a bunch of other accounts will make it really hard to end up in a primary email inbox. Most of the time you’ll get diverted to promotions (Gmail) or spam (a bunch of others).

Unless I’m missing this functionality somewhere (entirely possible), this lack of user-tuning has ruined Spotify recs for me, since I listen to entirely different playlists when working or meditating. I don’t check out recommendations to get the latest binaural beats or nature sounds, you know?
Although even before I started listening to Spotify while working etc, it seemed to have run out of things to recommend. My weekly discover playlist would be half things I’d already liked. So...who knows. But I miss the discovery functionality quite a bit.

on: The opioid effects of gluten exorphins: asymptomatic celiac disease (2015)
If you’ve already cut out gluten, you’ll have to start eating it again for the test, which is...not pleasant. And for a long time too. (I’ve been given different durations for the challenge period, but they were all at least 3 weeks long when I last investigated this.) This is why I’ve never done the test.
Random tip: if you accidentally expose yourself to gluten, taking Benadryl right away can help with the flu-y sort of inflammatory symptoms. You’ll still get the gastric distress, but you might not feel like you have the flu for the next week, which for me is the worst part.

on: What if Twitter, Roam, and del.icio.us had a baby? It'd look like this
Congrats on launching. I checked out your landing page, but I still don’t know exactly what your product is or what it’s for. Defining it in terms of other services doesn’t give me a clear picture of what it is or compel me to use it. Showing some use cases or examples might help. (The google sign in is also a dealbreaker for me, but I’m still curious as to what this is.)
