to get battlefield 3 working on ma friends windows vista pc i had to install 215 updates. it took 6 hours. why? because the machine had to have IE9 installed even though that wasn't his default browser and wasn't the browser started when origin kicked off battlefield. so for sure this is cool in theory. the idea is certainly plausible and fun to talk about, but melding the complexity of web apps with the complexity of system apps makes me shudder.

jesus. get a grip. its a stupid bot email. if thats the only way you can communicate with your users is through their hitting reply to an obvious no-reply email then you've got other problems.

oh_no_my_eyes | 15 years ago | on: Ask HN: What happens to old developers?

I'm about to turn 30 in a month. I find myself coding less and spending more time reviewing code and systems designs. I work with other, younger devs (hopefully) teaching how to structure applications and organize them for easier deployment. I'm still always on the lookout new ideas, tools, language patterns, etc. That part of the job never stops. I also get to think about higher level systems architecture, scalability/availability. Fun stuff :) If you wanna stay elbow deep in code and not manage people or go to meetings all day then work with a small startup where every developer has to pitch in.

if were going to talk about HTTP monitor alternatives please dont forget to talk about Charles. In many ways i prefer it to built in browser monitors because it is designed to capture any requests regardless of source.

Percolate is hiring. We're an NYC-based startup looking for specialists in Python (Django experience a plus). Our needs include:

Interests in scalable web technologies (MapReduce, DB Clustering, Asynchronous Processing, Awesome Search/IR).

We are very young and have a prototype site and api (both of which are down for site maintenance atm).

Right now the team includes an engineer, a front-end developer, and a mathematician. We feel very strongly about the quality of our product and are excited to bring on smart people who love to build out the web in new ways.

will aaaaat percolate derp org

From the article.. -- I once asked Michael Chertoff, the secretary of Homeland Security, about this. "We actually ultimately do have a vision of trying to move the security checkpoint away from the gate, deeper into the airport itself, but there’s always going to be some place that people congregate. So if you’re asking me, is there any way to protect against a person taking a bomb into a crowded location and blowing it up, the answer is no." --

The implications of this reality have to be considered. The TSA does not exist to protect passengers on the planes. The TSA exists to prevent terrorists from getting the planes themselves and using them as weapons. If terrorists wanted to kill you, the passenger, then they would indeed do so as you waited to be screened through security. I guess you can take some comfort in the fact that they don't hate you, personally, for your freedoms...

I think he's referring to TSA officials not being trained very well, and that their biggest indicator of a potential threat is the name and race of the passenger.

oh_no_my_eyes | 15 years ago | on: The difference between Apple and everyone else

the mac people seem to be saying the solution to this problem is to buy an iphone or ipad. that is a really, really lousy answer. despite the fact that to use one of those devices would be really cool, it means I have to buy a totally separate device for the device I just bought. At least the remote comes with the TV! Even if it sucks its fully functional.

How do you actually search from that remote? Can you?

That visio remote looks pretty cool as far as solving the qwerty interface obstacle.

I don't know why they don't just implement a simple Apple remote with an annoying on screen keyboard but really kickass voice recognition...
