on: US moves to cancel one of the largest solar farms
A tragedy. Killing this and Revolution Wind are some of the most consequential acts of the Trump administration. We are now unable to do large scale grid-connected energy projects and won't be able to take advantage of the incredible advances in efficiency renewables provide. With data centers causing the first increase in per-capita energy usage in decades there's a good chance we have an actual power crisis and the administration's other priorities like reshoring manufacturing become impossible.

on: America desperately needs more air traffic controllers
It's been reported that the elevation of the helicopter was reported as hundreds of feet off. It's unlikely it was just an issue at the specific tower the crash occurred at. If they can't even get accurate elevation data there's no way they'll be able to automate.

on: Downtown SF office building sells for 66% below assessed value
The worry about the doom loop is not that rich people lose money but that the current budget is tied to high tax receipts and when assessments go down tax revenue will plunge. Services will have to be cut to balance the budget.

on: Ask HN: How are colleges adapting to the era of AI-Produced Essays?
Lots of schools are using AI detection software, however I think this is because ChatGPT has really only been huge for an academic year so course policies are already set in stone.
Going forward a lot more grading emphasis on in-class quizzes and assignments. Most classes already weight the final for 20-30 percent of the grade and I've seen some profs who assign essay finals instead assign in-class writing finals.
One student I talked to said her professor made them use word and share editing history.

on: Uber posts first quarterly net profit
Most restaurants didn't offer delivery so there was less competition and the ones that did could keep in-house drivers busy. This meant only half the trip (restaurant->customer) had to be completed after the order was made. It also meant the driver-ready-vs-food-ready problem didn't exist.
The cuisines that offered delivery were also those optimized for delivery. Pizza and American Chinese travels much better than burgers and fries. Not only do they stand up better to sitting between being made and consumed but it's easier to count how many pizza boxes there are than make sure the burger also got its fries and side salad.
