I wouldn't use Linode. Not that I don't love Linode but for a simply family blog it's total overkill. I use DigitalOcean for a couple of smaller sites and have no problem with them (and costs $6/month as opposed to $20/month with Linode).

I also use Jekyll which is a static blog generator. I use Bitbucket to directly edit the pages and posts on my blog and when I commit a change my blog is automatically regenerated via service hooks. That might be a bit more setup than you want but it works nicely and is easy to maintain.

It sounds like you are trying too hard to feel validated and you want immediate success. You have written a very long piece including your entire background, the success of your peers compared to yourself, the positions and awards you have gotten in various competitions (for better or worse). You sound entirely focused on accolades and achievements yet you have only been going at this for at most 1/2 years.

You need to calm down and slow down. You are only 22/23. You have so much time ahead of you and you have to walk before you can run. You have burned yourself out by too high expectations. It's not as easy as having an idea, hacking away at it for a few months and then reaping the reward.

I would suggest lowering your expectations over the short term and trying to come up with some realistic goals for the next few months. Not "launch great project in 6 months" but "talk to 5 people about the validity of feature X in the 7 days" etc.

You've already helped yourself by acknowledging the problem, writing about it and telling your family and friends.

pastylegs | 12 years ago | on: Show HN: Pagesnap – Take monthly screenshots of any webpage automatically

- Adding visual diffs would be very cool.

- Some sort of visual timeline would also be great, i.e. the ability to flip through screenshots with a javascript slider or something

- Export to gifs of video might be useful

- The ability to tag information to certain screenshots would be useful for noting changes and milestones (like in Google Analytics)

Is WhatsApp popular in the states? I'm Irish and living in Spain and in both countries it's incredibly popular. Most of my communication is channeled through it (I'd rather send a WhatsApp then call in most cases)

pastylegs | 12 years ago | on: Show HN: Free screen recording Mac app that uploads while you record

This is very useful and nicely put together. Well done! An easy iframe embed link on the playback page would be nice (pro feature?). Also, being able to target a window using the spacebar (like the native screenshot app) would be useful, as would full screen recording (at the moment if I go to the top left of the screen with the intention of dragging the selection box over the whole screen, the menubar gets in the way). Finally, I noticed that the progress percentage goes backwards sometimes (41% ... 42% ... 43% ... 41% ... 44%)

"Frankly, if you're not into bingo and ballroom dancing, you may find there's not much for you to do on the ship other than work or read."

What is happening to people? When you are insulating yourself from nearly every aspect of day-to-day normality just to be able to concentrate without distraction there is a problem and it's likely you are working to much. I'm all up for travelling but this just seems like an easy way to remove yourself from the world to get more done. Why not just check into a mental health clinic with a wifi dongle - you won't have to cook or clean and they'll be perfectly equipped to deal with you once the monumental burnout hits.

pastylegs | 12 years ago | on: Show HN: Salsa subscription service

I think you need to add some information. Who you are, why you are doing this, where you are, what you will be sending a customer, how you will be sending it, the ingredients used and so on. Presumably anyone who is willing to pay $30 a month is already interested in salsa so play up to that.

pastylegs | 12 years ago | on: Dear USA, my data has left your building

It's interesting to see people doing this as it's something I've been planning to try. I've backed the Lima project on Kickstarter which will hopefully become my Dropbox replacement:

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/cloud-guys/plug-the-brai...

and the Mailpile project on Indiegogo which will hopefully work as my email frontend on a local server:

http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/mailpile-taking-e-mail-bac...

I'm planning on buying a small server for running all my services on a VPN (mail server, GitLab, Mailpile etc.) and a decent NAS with RAID'ed backups of server + lima drives + time machine and if possible send that to a safe off-site backup.

You reported the results of somebody exploiting your account, not an exploit. Why would they reward a simple bug report?

pastylegs | 12 years ago | on: Stripe in Ireland

I don't know a lot about Stripe, but I have been using Paypal to accept payments for work (I'm a web developer) from the US (I live in Ireland). Would Stripe be a viable alternative to this approach (I'm not fully comfortable with Paypal)? Stripe seems to be aimed moreso at transaction based payments (shops etc.)

pastylegs | 12 years ago | on: Kids can't use computers, and why it should worry you

I pressed back immediately after reading this opening. Not because I fall into the category of person the author describes but because I'm not bothered reading an article written by somebody who starts their blog posts by insulting their readers.
