Did the same exact thing back in 2015 that used the omnivision sensor in wiimotes, having the benefit that the sensor readily reports the position of detected infrared spots, so no cpu-heavy postprocessing needed. The 20MHz clock for the sensor was taken from CLKOUT from the controlling avr cpu, so only three parts on the rotating part (laser, cpu, sensor).

I would recommend adding a slit and a bandgap filter to reduce the amount of non-laserlight, because i had big problems with false positives from stray light (sunlight etc).

Project Link: What's that? And what problem does it solve? No one will understand, no one will use.

Project Sensor Web: Yeah, let's add another solution to this problem that has been solved ten times over. w(

Project Smart Home: Also crowdsourced? After Mozillas previous handling of hardware (like ffos dev-phones that were deprecated in record speed) i can only say: Dont.

Project Vasomething: ANOTHER IoT framework that is used and needed by no one?

We are about 2 years past peak Mozilla.

It took me about a minute to find 12 false entries just by looking what lines end in .de
