Oxen and sled. Much safer than engines and wheels.

Yes, but it takes 100's of thousands of years for the planet to form fossil fuels such as coal. We can't wait that long.

Breastfeeding is optimal for a baby. We are not responsible for hiding facts from mothers in order to manage their feelings of guilt.

on: The Sanskrit verse for the value of pi
Not BS, take the equator as the circumference and a weighted average between sea level and the highest point on that line for the constant circular path and you'll have a measurement relative to pi.

on: Did these guys just reinvent the Web?
"We were 14 times faster than compiled C in Chrome..." I feel this part needs clarification. As I understand it the "in Chrome" part is key, as they were bypassing the browser and interpreting javascript through compiled C (matrix3d).

I think TylerE's point is that further 50% gains in six months are not guaranteed. You can look at any stock index and find assets that spiked in a similar manner. Had you invested in those, you would have made the same return without having to buy, store and run hardware.

Slow clap from Linux users everywhere. I think we are so jaded that some of us prefer the masses to remain ignorant to the fact of a more powerful, more stable and free OS. Things have become familiar this way.

Suicide is something that can never be fully controlled. It may be illegal to do it, but it's a literal inalienable right, no matter how strong the law against it.

on: Web development in C: Crazy?
While that may be true for the short term, what about the power, maintenance, storage etc costs that recur? I'm not sure a C dev's pay is equal to the running costs of a server farm...

on: Web development in C: Crazy?
When you get 90x the performance using C rather than PHP, the only thing stopping its use is human resources.
To put it into perspective, you would need 90 PHP servers to do the same work in the same time as a single C server. Any more debate?

on: It's not the $7, but the principle
Someone downvoted me. Probably didn't get the analogy, so I'll spell it out. The gold mine = a subscriber. The nuking of said mine = fleecing the subscriber on his/her first payment and thus losing the subscription.

on: It's not the $7, but the principle
Here's a gold mine that will pay out for years, perhaps decades. Let's nuke the mine and get an extra 1/5th on the first payout, sacrificing all future gains. Real smart there boys.

Why is this comment getting downvoted? I see that it adds insight to the subject and makes some good points, which OP even acknowledges. The written complaint is that revelation is not being deferential enough, which is bullshit on an in-depth technical discussion.

on: BMW's New Electric Car Is Just Like a Tesla, Only Much, Much Worse
Agreed about the Scion iQ, but that design isn't terrible. Having watched the BMW's promo video (which shows it in its best light), the car doesn't look out of place on today's roads and appears quite practical for a "typical" suburban lifestyle.
