I just got in to milling trees in the last month, went from a 20" to mill up an old oak that fell in my back yard to a 36" 661. All I can say is the satisfaction of seeing what is in a tree has been some of the most fun I've ever had in 100+ degree weather. If you made it 75 degrees and 5000 years old I may never stop hunting.

pieperz | 8 years ago | on: Ask HN: Is it 'normal' to struggle so hard with work?

I always thought I was ADHD, then I started a business, turns out I just like to do things my way and lead not follow. I've struggled to "focus" my whole life I'm a jack of all trades and master of none.

When you find the right thing you'll know. I would do what I do now for free or if I was worth 100 Million because I love the game.

pieperz | 9 years ago | on: Ask HN: What did you do after quitting the IT industry and how have things been?

I got burnt out doing JS apps development during the past 2 years. I got laid off and knew I did not want a desk job anymore.

I took what skills I had woodworking/web development and started a business. Its called Stump Crafters I build "stumps" to hammer nails in to its a pretty fun game and is not as dumb as it sounds. The game is in much the same vein as Cornhole, washers or other backyard games.

I even made a custom Node.js for a local meet-up group I go to often. https://stumpcrafters.com/pages/custom

I have not fully bailed on IT yet. But I don't think I will be touching any code in another few months.

Now I spend most of my time working in the shop and running the store. It's awesome.

pieperz | 10 years ago | on: Ask HN: What are your non-computer-based hobbies?

Woodworking and welding are the 2 hobbies I have found that cultivate a programmers mindset.

Both crafts are heavily focused on making jigs and precision. Then as you become better you find ways to improve your speed.

Wood working is a huge craft much like programming. Go watch some videos on https://www.reddit.com/r/woodworkingvideos but be weary its easy to get lost for hours.

If you have money and space think about a table saw and build some jigs for it(its like getting your IDE setup).

If space and moeny are a problem look in to joinery to get started. Hand cutting "dove tails" is extraordinarily gratifying and can be done with minimal investment while you are learning but as you will see the price quickly gose up if you want the best tools.

If you have more specific questions about wood working or welding let me know (PM's are best) I could talk for days.

pieperz | 10 years ago | on: Ask HN: Coding club for college business majors

I do not know any python so I am somewhat bias but. Why not start with simple JavaScript and interact with a simple REST API.

With as ubiquitous as JS has become it gives students the ability to just open up a browser and try programming from the convince of a web browser.

pieperz | 10 years ago | on: Ask HN: How do you keep your notes organized?

I use evernote to take "notes" and WIP stuff(this makes it searchable). Then I have trello boards with higher level planning. To stay out of the weeds I roughly use GTD/khanban/agile that I have made work for me. It took quite a while to get my system dialed in but once it clicked I easily got 40% more productive because of the gained focus on what I "SHOULD" be working on.

pieperz | 10 years ago | on: Would You Hire a Bootcamp Grad?

I would also add that I am not sure about the MEAN stack camps I have seen few if any job descriptions that actually used that stack more than likely they just want you to know JS.

pieperz | 10 years ago | on: Would You Hire a Bootcamp Grad?

It depends on the camp and who the somebody is. All boot camps are not created equal. I went to a boot camp that was not in the top tier and while I dont necessarily regret going lets just say it was not the reason I was able to get hired.
