on: Ask HN: What is the worst bullshit thing you were asked to do at $JOB?
I worked for a company that manufactured and applied a hybrid sealcoat/asphalt product. The product was transported in 10,000 gallon tankers. During the winter my co workers and I would have to clean out the residual product inside of the tankers with pneumatic air chisels. It was freezing cold dirty ass work, I'm very grateful I no longer have to work that job.

My father reported a similar story induced by LSD. He had an out of body experience where he was up in the air watching himself have a conversation with a friend walking down the beach.

I just bought the Adder WS and can't believe the quality of the trackpad. I also own a 2015 MBP and before the Adder I had not found another laptop with a trackpad that can rival the Mac. Overall very satisfied with the whole machine so far.

I like Robert Anton Wilson's definition. "A stochastic process is a random series, but it is a special
kind of random series. In a stochastic process, some agent
or agency is making selections—picking out of the
randomness a pattern that is not random."

Agreed. I just feel bad for him now, it appears he was very depressed and that's nothing to romanticize.

Another explanation could be the people in the 70s had a healthier gut microbiome. I don't we think know enough to say for certain but studies have found gut bacteria affects metabolism and can be linked to obesity and diabetes.

It's called ego death and it can also be terrifying. I've tripped with people who thought they were dying because their subjective self identify was dissolving.

on: Ask HN: What are some of your recent failures?
I've been failing to grow. I feel stagnant at my current job and yearn for greener pastures. Bad habits prevent me from being productive in my spare time. Very little action is being taken to improve my situation and I feel like a slave to the habits I've cultivated.

With a high enough dose of LSD, your current models of the world break down. Maybe the CIA was trying to imprint new reality tunnels for people during this vulnerable point in the trip.

It hits home for me but I'm probably the minority. I have a senior title but I'm a PeopleSoft developer which is kind of becoming an obsolete niche. I don't really have the skill set to interview for other senior software development positions.

This also happened to me at my current employer. In fact every year they review all employees salaries compared to the market rate and compensate for any difference with a raise. This was in addition to the yearly raise based on a performance review. I think companies serious about retaining talent are starting to employ this practice.
