questiondev | 4 years ago | on: GDPR penalty for passing on of IP address to Google by using Google Fonts

that is true but it increases the barrier to entry for those who use google fonts for system resource issues, a lot of people offload because they don’t have the space or money to self host everything

one could argue that it is less eco friendly as well given how much space is going to be used repeating the same file on a multitude of servers

questiondev | 4 years ago | on: The depopulation timebomb facing the West is about to explode

it’s not really that people don’t want to work in the states, for some it was lack of social support, outstanding college debt that made the bar to entry seem impossible or to late for some. especially for those who took care of their parents growing up because their parents were sick at a young age.

that is a good take on it, i would also say happiness, if you see your parents and grandparents falling in love and starting a life together but you are pushing 40 with nothing to show for it because of unstable environment conditions, poor schooling and unfair labor wages which are all have to do with equality then people will look for a representation of their struggle.

the blm movement was not just about blm, a lot of it was used as a starter to talk about a related issue. which is equality in general, you can see this by how many socialist supporters came out. in reality mlk supported fair wages for all working class people and that is the “conspiracy” theory of why he got shot, but obviously if people can’t eat, or if they feel very they are being massively mistreated, they will riot.

the energy crisis is not really a crisis with energy but a crisis with policy, there is a lot of energy floating around us that we do not harvest, the ocean is filled with energy that can be harvested safely without harming ecosystems. we really have a lack of resourcefulness problem, outdated systems in place that stop progress and keep us all asking why can’t we fix this?

questiondev | 4 years ago | on: The old internet shows signs of quietly coming back

i think they are referring what we use to be allowed to say in chat channels and on forums. it was a lot more raw, a lot of offended people starting getting online and treating the internet like it was real life, part of the beauty of the internet was how non-regulated it was, granted the quality has gotten better, safer spaces for things like business, finance and other sensitive information but we also lost the jokes that the internet use to have, on the main channels at least. back in the day you could get kicked from a mainstream irc channel but it too a lottttt to get banned from an irc network or even an online forum. which granted you can still find sub communities like you mention that still cater to hacking, off jokes and crazy information but it’s not tolerated on the main channels of communication like before, which is fine for people who weren’t into that stuff because it didn’t change for them. but overall there has been changes, not terrible but def not the same as irc/usenet/bbs’s during their hayday. information was widely accessible but a lot of it is a paywall these days, also torrenting was a lot more common and i could call someone a moron without getting flagged. but yeah we still got some freedom and there are better quality services in some ways, i guess it just depends on your personality and how much it has limited expressing ones self authentically.

questiondev | 4 years ago | on: Antimicrobial resistance now a leading cause of death worldwide, study finds

this and the amount of additives we have in our food supply here in the us. many of the color additives have been studied and many are considered immunosuppressants and abundantly found in many many many foods that you wouldn’t even think of, check out the app yuka, it allows you to scan upc codes and it will give you a readout of all the studies on each additive a product has and whether it has any adverse affects. many hazardous additives are allowed to be used in our food supply.

questiondev | 4 years ago | on: Jack Dorsey and Marc Andreessen's crypto feud puts Web3 at risk

it’s always interesting to see how many people on hn dislike web3, could it be because some have investments in “traditional” ventures that may become obsolete due to web3? i can understand the negativity towards it but to me this is how technology operates. whenever something new comes out the next generation adopts it while the previous generation seems to be extremely skeptical until one day they buy in. what i would love to see is the hype subside, the market to level out and then see where we are, i really don’t see this going away anytime soon, in reality it’s gonna be here for a lot longer than what most skeptics think

questiondev | 4 years ago | on: Locked out of 'God Mode', runners are hacking their treadmills

i agree, if you buy something, you buy it for how it is, now sometimes we may want to update for our benefit but other times maybe not, maybe updating would cause more harm than help. therefore we should have to consent to updates, i 100% agree with this and it’s not even that much code to add a “is it cool if we update?” alert.

questiondev | 4 years ago | on: Suicidal and depressed 55 yr old ex radio announcer homeless

it’s wild to think but a large amount of people who are homeless are actually anxiety ridden introverts that have very little connections to people who can help them out.

it would be one thing if we all started out on the same foot but we don’t, some things in life are just easier because of your circumstances.

a lot of people seem to not want to realize their own privilege. which is fine but when it comes to judging others we really cannot use the same scale because we all start out off different.

even two siblings can start out different enough where one has a bad leg up in society and the other doesn’t. mental health plays a large role in all of this.

questiondev | 4 years ago | on: Study: No convincing scientific evidence that hangover cures work

exactly, it’s funny how some people will downvote others for speaking what works for them. i’ll never understand that.

both kratom and coffee are related, kratom gets a bad rap because of headshops but people have been using it for all types of things for over 300 years with little to no issues.

there’s even some journals on it’s use with reducing some covid symptoms. not a cure but definitely seems helpful

questiondev | 4 years ago | on: Advice to startup founders: prepare to fail

i know for me assuming my business would fail was a natural assumption.

what i would like to see is more articles on bouncing back after a bad failure, or dealing with the rejection from friends and family during the building process.

mvp’s do not come over night so any advice on sticking in there until you have an mvp would be highly valuable especially with those of us who started out in extreme poverty and don’t have anybody else to look towards for support.

questiondev | 4 years ago | on: Someone attached an AirTag to my car while I was in a bar

it might have been law enforcement. they might be using this to track potential drunk drivers (i am not saying you were drunk driving or anything) but i do know there was a few articles on it this year, here is one i found

https://www.macrumors.com/2021/07/19/police-find-unexpected-...

or it could be worse and you could have a unhinged stalker on your hands. both are intrusive.

but it’s hard to say, is there a way to find out the owner or look at log files to see what op or which provider is accessing the location details of a tag? i know about these tags but i’ve never used one before so understanding is fairly fresh
