Yup, that's correct, though the old library in my repo still works and is used by some folks, maintenance of SoCo is handled by a group of very talented and friendly developers under https://github.com/SoCo/SoCo

It looks like the author used SoCo for the Raspberry Pi project mentioned at the bottom of the article.

Carvoyant [1] makes a small device that plugs into your car's OBD2 port, and exposes the data through an API. It's somewhat similar to Automatic [2], but available now and has an API. I've got one in my car, but haven't had a chance to play around with the API yet.

I had no idea. Any particular cities/areas in particular? (I live in LA.)

Not sure how important it is for others, but I was surprised by the lengthy wait time to form an LLC in California. I filed for formation at the beginning of February and it still has not gone through. If you take a look at http://www.sos.ca.gov/business/be/processing-times.htm you'll see there is an almost two month wait time for new formations. This prevents me from opening up a business bank account and cashing checks, amongst other things.

rahim | 14 years ago | on: Re. No NDAs: What Should Idea People Do?

Most NDAs have such a period stated in the contract. However, every now and then, you come across one that doesn't. (I just received one earlier this week that did not explicitly state one.) So, as always, read everything before you sign!

rahim | 14 years ago | on: Waking up early, 10 tips that worked for me

I tried just jumping out of bed and getting going, but it ended up with me failing more often than not. What works for me is to ease into waking up with a set, autopilot-type routine, something you can do without even thinking about it. Wake up, get out of bed right away, walk to the bathroom, start the shower, get in.

rahim | 14 years ago | on: Best Buy CEO Brian Dunn resigns

I've purchased two MacBook Airs from Best Buy and had the exact same experience. Walk in knowing exactly what I want and ready to buy, wait ~30 minutes for an associate to free up only to be told that he/she doesn't manage that area, and then wait some more for someone that does.

The reason I bought from Best Buy rather than the Apple store is the discounted price. Best Buy sells the Air for something around $50 cheaper than Apple. I haven't made use of it yet, but their Black Tie warranty seems pretty good. You're covered for everything from hardware malfunction (out of your control) to accidental coffee spills (in your control).

rahim | 14 years ago | on: Google I/O Sells Out in 30 Seconds

I think that might be in part because the people that attend solely for the gadgets probably only show up to pick up the freebies, so you aren't likely to run into them at the talks.

In my group of friends alone, I know of at least 10 people (non-developers with no interest to start) that got tickets last year, went up to I/O as a SF vacation, stopped by Moscone to pick up the freebies, then sold them off to pay for the trip and then some. While I, as a developer with an Android app published, didn't manage to get tickets last year nor this year.

rahim | 14 years ago | on: Amit Gupta hasn't found a marrow transplant match; today's your last chance.

I've heard a few numbers thrown around, 1 in 20,000 comes up often, but I haven't found any reputable sources to back that up. According to the National Marrow Donor Program:

"On average, one in every 540 members of Be The Match Registry in the United States will go on to donate marrow to a patient."

http://marrow.org/Registry_Members/Donation/Donation_FAQs.as...

I can say from personal experience that I've been a registered donor for 8 years, and only just yesterday did I receive an e-mail saying that I may be a possible match for a patient. The process going forward is fairly long with tests along the way to be certain (http://marrow.org/Registry_Members/Donation/Steps_of_Donatio...). I was told it could be up to 2 months before doctors decide if I move on to the next stage of donation. If the doctors decide I'm the best match, it could be another 6 months before the actual donation.
