I was following him on Twitter, and it was always amazing that a genius like him took the time to respond to people on Twitter with insightful comments. Showed what a great human being he was. RIP Joe.

Do you have small kids? Just curious, because having a small helpless human dependent on you for their survival and well being has made me change my attitude towards life a bit away from Stoicism.

> that airline has a bad safety record
Could you substantiate the above claim ? Whatever I have read indicates Ethiopian has a very good safety record.
e.g. The airline has a safety rating of six stars out of a possible seven on respected aviation site AirlineRating.com. Source: https://thepointsguy.com/news/despite-recent-crash-ethiopian...

on: Why Portland's Public Toilets Succeeded Where Others Failed (2012)
Reminds me of an incident narrated by Prof. Amartya Sen during a speech:
He had gone to Germany for a conference. While walking back to his hotel, had to cross the street. There were no vehicles in sight, but the light was red. After waiting for some time, he thought "what the heck", and crossed the street even though the light was still red. After a few minutes, a German man walked up to him and said "Mr. Amartya Sen, in Germany we follow the rules even if there are no cars". He apologised to the German, and asked him if he knew him, may be from the conference. To which the man replied, "I have no idea who you are, I just read your name from the conference ID card hanging from your neck".

Asus zenfone max pro M1 has a close-to-stock version of Android 8.1. I am using it for the past couple of months and pretty happy with the phone.

on: Studies are increasingly clear: Uber, Lyft congest cities
I experienced this first hand in Bangalore last year, when Uber and Ola (a company offering similar services) drivers went on strike for a week or so. Roads were much less congested during that time period.

It is a big health/hygiene problem. If you happen to be in fairly large train stations in India in the mornings, you can see cleaning staff spreading bleaching powder on the tracks to cover up the mess.

on: Indian phones are weird
A couple of years back, I started getting daily SMS in my Airtel mobile about some female actor's latest movies or whatever, without any action on my side. It took a few days for me to realise that I am losing 50p/day for getting those messages. The messages stopped after a call to the service centre; but I did not get the money back.

on: So You Wanna Buy a Telescope: Advice for Beginners (2015)
I wish I had come across this article earlier. Recently bought my first telescope: a 6" reflector with EQ mount (Celestron Astromaster 130 EQ). While the images are superb, I find it very hard to find my desired objects in the night sky. The finderscope on the unit is either useless, or I don't know how to use it correctly.

on: Google breaks through China’s Great Firewall but only for just over an hour
A short while ago, I visited China for a week. Before my visit, I had dutifully downloaded the offline Mandarin files for Google Translate in my Nexus 5 in the hope of using it even when Google isn't available. But it was of no use because it still needed to contact Google for whatever reason and refused to do any voice/image translation.

on: New Chromecast 2015
When I bought my TV supporting Miracast protocol, I thought I would not need to buy a Chromecast. And it (the TV) worked beautifully with my Nexus 5 for some days. But soon, the phone stopped casting the screen on the TV. Another phone (Moto X Play) still works fine though, so pretty sure it is a phone problem.
A conspiracy theorist would suggest Google intentionally breaking Miracast support to boost sales of Chromecast ;)

I have given feedback on search for "BMTC" not returning the official website of BMTC (bmtcinfo.com). (2-3 months back). But the search results haven't changed since then.

In India, generally B Tech degree is completed when the student is aged 21. Since he did it in 1983, he should be 47. Just a guess.
