I've noticed a lot of content lately that purposely farms engagement through dark patterns. For instance: getting a detail wrong or poor spelling/grammar almost always draws a lot of responses to dunk on the original creator.

When platforms like Twitter and TikTok monetize engagement you realize that these can often be intentional. Once you recognize the patterns it becomes very hard to unsee.

In the US it exists but you have to be a bit more aware of body language and such. Not everyone is as open. But generally communities exist all around you in the US, you may just not be aware of them.*

* This is strictly in the cities. Suburban life is where isolation and loneliness thrive.

Your username is hilarious in context of this post. Sure there are a lot of horrible things that it's introduced. Replace social media with any other technology..what good have computers brought? What good has the automobile brought?

It is all perspective and humans will use tools for good and bad. There is plenty of good in the world thanks to social media.

As someone who lives in NYC, there are a lot of "sides" to it. What you're describing definitely exists, but to generalize the whole city as a laundering operation would be akin to generalizing a large tech org based on your experience with one small team.

Lovely store, had a blast spending time in there a few years ago. Moog is also employee owned! Asheville in general was a great city to spend time in.

It just happened to me, slightly different situation than a "counter offer" but it was clear upon being let go that I was retained with a short term mindset, despite what I was pitched before deciding on whether or not to sign.

Everything has bias, it's the human condition. The post does just fine informing readers and if you read the comments theres plenty more information on how Dominos exploits its workers and is just generally not for the people.

DO your research, sure. Fact checking is important. But if it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck..

Surely your coworker is an outlier. Feels like what you're describing is a great opportunity for a small amount of data analysis to allow companies to be gracious with customers who genuinely made a mistake and customers abusing the system.

> It often feels like we as a society have sort of entered into a weird territory with a lot of these liberal changes.

I feel like you could write this sentence at almost any point in modern history.

> The societal structures that have worked in the past, while you may not like them, did work.

Worked for whom exactly? Almost laughable how people from different backgrounds would have a VERY different opinion on this. Basically any minority, whether that be gender, racial, or religious among other oppressed groups.

> Fertility wins in the end,

Wins in what way? The continued existence of the human race? I think we're seeing a slow down in birth rates for a number of reasons, but heres a few big ones amongst my circles:

- anxiety/fear of the present, leaving no time to consider having offspring - anxiety/fear of the future being enjoyable and/or inhabitable for offspring - a focus on enjoying the present as opposed to striving for a better tomorrow for offspring

If political philosophies care at all about fertility they better start looking at it holistically and not purely from a breeding standpoint, because otherwise people will wise up to being treated like birth & labor livestock.

What happens when the terms of service change in real time? When you try to contact someone and you're met with a void? When your livelihood is tied to a platform that decides to shut down? When an algorithm determines you're a threat or you're not allowed to cross a boarder?

Tech is integrating itself into daily life every day, for better and for worse. Leaders in the space need to slow down and realize the havoc they wreck when they "move fast and break things."

As someone on HN you're likely privy to how to navigate these waters. Everyday people are buying into whatever they're being sold (because why wouldn't they when they've basically got no viable alternatives) from tech and then being left empty handed when the VCs and leaders get their payouts and move on to what ever shiny object they spot on the horizon.

If you or your family and friends haven't been on the receiving end of fines or imprisonment due to technology consider yourself lucky and diversify your community.

Have you ever lived in modern society? Its basically occupational therapy keeping you busy with maintaining your <insert local environment>. And its hugely popular.

skciva | 4 years ago | on: As the Pandemic Recedes, Millions of Workers Are Saying 'I Quit'

I've been seeing this sentiment shared recently and what I always suggest is to

1) Look at your hobbies 2) Find people who share those hobbies

Plenty of opportunities exist whether through meetup, BumbleBFF, local postings in cafes/on lamp posts, etc. (this is true of cities, remote destinations may be more difficult but thats the tradeoff of living around less people I suppose)

If you can't find groups for your hobbies, try starting them! Doesn't have to be a permanent leadership role, but if you get the ball rolling others will likely come and BOOM you've found potential friends.

If you don't have hobbies, look into volunteer groups. Rewarding and often extremely kind people who will value what you bring to the table.

Hope this helps!

Love this, thanks for sharing. I'm sure I'm not alone in the HN crowd of having fond memories of BW playing days.

The sonic weapon, while accidental, feels similar to tactics used to disrupt concentration and logical thinking. E.g. taunting, trolling, cheese strategies, or your opponent getting tilted from something you didn't intend to annoy them with.

Often think of how keeping a cool head is incredibly important in games like this, specifically for the pros. IdrA comes to mind as a technically gifted player who was often his own worst enemy due to his temper. He never did crack into the top of the pro scene (hard to do as an American in general) but felt like he really held himself back.
