What do the watchers think we should do when we can't even have an open rational discussion about constitutional rights especially regarding new technology and information. I am willing to discuss and debate. My data was yours with a warrant. The tools to go beyond that weren't mainstream. By refusing to communicate the internet is working around you. Rightfully so.

I'm using xprivacy. It is a pain in the ass but does give me the functionality you mentioned. Root required. Asks with popup on requested permission. Tracks app permission request history. Fresh installed apps restricted by default. I paid for the pro/donation version which fetches community curated restriction lists. Honestly I don't know if its worth the bother but seems like the least I can do. I do get some comfort finding many apps I install actually use less permissions than they ask for at install.

I don't see where it says "more secure". Secure only shows up once in the article and once in their privacy policy.

Perhaps it would be better to stick to "privacy" as that's the value i see here.

the privacy policy states: ... affiliated organizations that (i) need to know that information in order to process it on FamilyLeaf’s behalf or to provide services available at FamilyLeaf’s websites, and (ii) that have agreed not to disclose it to others.

Looks cool! I'm hopeful they will be around awhile.

Reading your second paragraph made me chuckle. Your point is likely spot on but I couldn't help thinking how most of that paragraph involved jargon that most people I know would get glossy eyed over. I wonder if rewording it to laymans or non 'geeks' terms might help.

Information on a webpage and 'the' webpage are not exactly the same. Rss uses information from the webpage to create a title and a short description in a way that you can view hundreds of titles and descriptions very quickly. When you find a title and or description that interests you a single click delivers the webpage in its authors intended form...

I think you're correct. If somebody said that to me before I had used Rss I might have glossed over as well.

edit: Sorry about the defunct company part.

I have never seen a 3d movie yet. I went to my best local theater, that was built within the last ten years (There actually are only two local movie theaters.) to see How to Train Your Dragon in 3d. The opening credits/intro pieces looked incredible. I was so excited! When the movie started I realized there were only two tiny speakers at the front of the theater by the screen outputting audio. I started complaining to the point that i was getting shushed by some patrons. Mostly asking around who else noticed the audio was broken.

After a few minutes I went to speak with the manager. Basically I was told I was the first person to complain and that was the way it was supposed to be. I couldn't fathom that to be correct so I continued to question the manager. Eventually she somewhat admitted that the audio, for some technical reason she couldn't explain was not properly able to be played on their 3d projection/audio system.

So I left. I got the ticket price refunded but not the cost of my concessions. I couldn't help but feel mass amounts of consumers were being ripped off. I felt the team that produced that fine film would have been heartbroken to have seen the movie there. I know i was not willing to watch a movie, my first 3d movie! with audio the quality of a poorly pirated movie.

I considered finding someone to complain too. I imagined the theater was breaking rules by showing the film with such a key component horribly crippled. But I did not.

I have not been back to see a 3d movie. I would like to see one someday. I will go again, perhaps to a theater in another town, someday. I hope they get their "stuff" together. Articles like this do not inspire confidence.

The one major thing I know of that has come of this is that I can put linux on my ps3 again. I'm happy about that. I'd like to think he willfully and knowingly unlocked a piece of hardware for the masses knowing it would primarily be used for piracy plus lots of other cool things too.

Not enough answers on the homepage or questions i care about to entice me to register to see more. i am not a student. i feel uneasy when all the information is behind locked doors and will not bother if i think the reward will not be worth the effort. your community is appears small. maybe hide the standings listings till theres more users. just my 2 cents, good luck.

How about tweaking karma to add value to certain users votes, users with tons of great submissions and comments to have more effect. You can grant power karma to people you feel have the same philosophy or that you feel drive HN in the direction you want. This isn't necessarily democratic or "fair" and i do not care because i love the great submissions with intelligent commentary. i have seen a lot of submissions concerned with submission quality and am happy to see HN publicly addressing the issue and apparently making an effort to ensure the quality and heritage of the site.
