Reading this, I cannot help but wonder.

We are clueless about the gut microbes in our body, but know a lot about dinosaurs. Most of the ocean floors remain inaccessible, yet we have a picture of the black hole. We have no idea where exactly are airplanes in the sky, but we are controlling rover on the surface of Mars that is sending us selfies.

I cannot help but wonder what if the Rover is actually on some unknown island on Earth itself & the picture of the black hole is actually something else.

FYI: I am just bored & hungry.

srndh | 6 years ago | on: Ask HN: How do I make sure my non-technical parents are safe online?

I am not sure how this will work between "a company & a customer". But I would like filter my parents SMS, so that they can see messages from known & trusted contacts, while I can ensure that the messages from unknown sender is not spam. 95% of unknown senders are spam.

srndh | 6 years ago | on: Ask HN: How do I make sure my non-technical parents are safe online?

I actually came to Hacker news to ask the same the question.

My Dad travelling to a different country for a month and the mobile network there was VOLTE, while at home its 3G. The phone (iphone 7) was having some issue and I was unable to help him. He took the phone to mobile shop and that guy installed a 3rd party app & made him put a passcode.

Actually the last time we travelled together & we both used that mobile network and there was no issue. So, there was no reason to put a passcode.

The issue is that when my dad has an issue, he tries to describe it to me and does not read to me exactly what he sees on the screen. It would be great if there was a remote desktop like I could see his device via my device and help him also. Also, have an admin account on the phone so that admin privileges are needed to install apps or even open the settings app.

In the past even my younger cousins or kids install apps (games or some hype app that they feel everyone must have) on his phone.

Better late than never, but the main question is who are left behind and do they have the same mindset as Eric. He is the virus that has multiplied well. Just another member in the club of Gates, Ellison, Ballmer, Jobs, Zuckerberg & more.

Question is, can we undo the damage done. In 2019 lingo, reverse the Thanos snap. Not sure of Sundar but I still hope that Google twins might do the right thing.

srndh | 7 years ago | on: Apache Software Foundation joins GitHub open source community

Sounds like a stupid question, but I am seriously asking it.

What was the infrastructure of ASF? Own servers? Wouldn't moving to a cloud provide helped reduce cost?

Ethically speaking, isn't it a conflict of interest that an idol of the open-source world is pairing up with Microsoft. Now that Microsoft has lost the former glory, they are desperately trying present a clean image, but all their deeds of the past are still fresh. I am waiting for the MSJVM 2.0 with github & atom & VSCode.

How is the Linux or FSF or Mozilla repo hosted? Scaling issues with GIT cannot be only tackled by Microsoft & Google.

> I've hired Rails developers for Django roles and seen them get productive within weeks.

What did you like about the Rails developer that you chose the person for the role? Basically, I want to know irrespective of the language, how do I show my "quality as an engineer"?

srndh | 7 years ago | on: We Don't Have a Talent Shortage. We Have a Sucker Shortage

I once interviewed at a company and I was shocked at the job description as it was network & server support + IT support + full stack developer in python, java & .net but the ad was for "an experienced python developer". My career history is, I started in IT support then became a developer in .net & later moved to Python. Maybe that is why they called me. But none the less, I told it was not possible for 1 person to do it all. But they said thats how they have it in the company with 3 member IT team. Interestingly, no member of the IT department or IT manager was at the interview. They refused to give any more details without me joining the company & signing a non-disclosure + non-competence + 2 yr bond.

Then once I was done with the interview, I went to the near by restaurant and casually asked if they knew anything about the company and luckily, a person from the accounts dept was there. So, he told me how the company initially had 12 members in the IT department when 6-8 would be enough. Then on a cost cutting sphere, they axed 6 on 1 day and then it thinned out to 3. Of which, the IT manager has resigned leaving just 2 members, both related to the owner. While the owner's son, a 1st yr cs grad student is the IT manager.

This is an extreme tale and I couldn't verify the story. But now this trend of making 1 person do the job of 2-3 for the salary of 1 seems common nowadays.

srndh | 7 years ago | on: Mozilla should give up on Firefox and go with Chromium too

With how much we depend on the web, we cannot just have one browser engine. Plus firefox despite not having the fancy budget of Google & Microsoft, they are delivering a kick ass product.

Plus with HTML5 & open standards, multiple engines MUST not be an issue at all.

Ofcourse, I don't need to convince why monopoly is bad in this forum.

srndh | 7 years ago | on: VSCodium: 100% Open Source Version of vs. Code

So, basically the version we download to install is actually the open-sourced version + Telemetry, with an option to disable the telemetry.

For the privacy-conscious or Microsoft distrusting folks, you can either build from source or just install VSCodium.

Have I got it?

srndh | 7 years ago | on: Linux-based 4G phones with Google Assistant sold for $7 in Indonesia

Wow. I didn't check the wikipedia entry for KaiOS earlier.

But the weird thing is that I recently read in some magazine (I am unable to remember the name) about Google investing in KaiOS which was a Brazilian company and the whole article was mentioning how Silicon Valley is unable to understand its customers as they live in a bubble and how its the companies in developing countries that truly understand the needs of the customer and deliver. Its mentioned that KaiOS is gunning at Android for #1 in India and Google's investment was a sign of acceptance and a hint that the new version of Android will get shelved soon. It even referred to India based Zoho as the true challenger to Google Apps & Office 360. Also how wechat is miles ahead of Whatsapp & likes and how in a sense it challenges the whole Silicon Valley in terms of all the features it has. Basically it was urging the readers to not assume that silicon valley products as superior and try others too.

I hope Mozilla reconsiders and starts up Firefox OS again. I prefer it over a company driven product like KaiOS.

P.S. Just noticed that the last name of the KaiOS's CEO is "Codeville".

> KaiOS (which is really Firefox OS)

Thats news to me. I read that KaiOS was built from the ground up & not derived from anything.

> Firefox OS hadn't thrown in the towel so early

That was a rather quite event and I was surprised to see no much discussion around it. An OS by Mozilla can be more trusted than an OS by Google. Why did Mozilla kill the project?
