SEEKING WORK - remote, India

Hi, I’ve been designing brands for over 10 years and developing websites for over 6 years. I designed the logo and identity for io.js which eventually became the new Node.js: http://behance.net/gallery/23269525/IOJS-logo-concept. The logo has been further refined based on feedback and can be seen here along with banners and icons that continue the logo’s theme: http://twitter.com/official_iojs

There are several more work samples on my portfolio: http://www.dffrnt.com

In addition to Branding & Identity, I work on responsive front-end (Bootstrap/Angular), back-end (Nginx/Node.js/MongoDB), WordPress and iOS app design and development.

takatin | 9 years ago | on: The basic neurobiology behind the 12-dot illusion

Because stars in the sky is a high contrast visual. That applies here too, I increased the contrast using Photoshop and the illusion is gone, you can see all 12 dots perfectly fine — http://imgur.com/a/G4xR4 I think they are spot on, outside the fovea, contrast detection capability of our eyes dip drastically thereby blending the dots lying outside the fovea with the surrounding grid. Increase the contrast to the point where even the regions outside the fovea can detect it and the illusion goes away.

takatin | 9 years ago | on: Ask HN: Data visualization consultant

I had previously contracted for Infinera working on their NMS suite. My contribution was a PoC running on D3 and Angular, using Semantic Topology that allows users to navigate any node or link in their network with zero clicks (scrolling and panning gets them anywhere à la Google Maps).

The hardest, most time-consuming part was prototyping because the tools out there (Framer, Principle, Quartz Composer, Adobe XD etc) are all optimized to work with lists and grids, not visualisations. I ended up creating three fully-functional prototypes in HTML and JS before finalizing on one. It was hard to get good feedback from the teams without live, interactive prototypes. There is also nothing like a standard library of well-designed components that can be grouped together to quickly mockup custom visualizations, like we have in Bootstrap for HTML frontends.

Another problem was performance; Angular, out-of-the-box, could not keep up with the amount of data coming through their pipes.

All in all, it was challenging and very, very fun to do. When it finally worked and people got their hands on it, it blew everyone away. If I were to do it all over again, I’d focus a lot more on explaining the challenges and setting realistic expectations. Custom visualisations are not 5-minute WordPress installs.

The work is under NDA but if you feel the need to discuss anything, my email is in my profile.

takatin | 9 years ago | on: Ask HN: Tabs or Spaces?

Tabs. There's a reason we put tab key on every keyboard out there, it is built specifically for alignment

The word tab derives from the word tabulate, which means "to arrange data in a tabular, or table, form." When a person wanted to type a table (of numbers or text) on a typewriter, there was a lot of time-consuming and repetitive use of the space bar and backspace key. — https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tab_key

takatin | 9 years ago | on: Ask HN: What do you want to learn in 2016?

I’m basically in the same boat as @mindcrime here, I want it all but this year’s focus has been and will continue to be:

- Style Transfer (so CNNs, Regressions and a whole bunch of Statistics concepts)

- React, React Native and that whole ecosystem

- How to identify and validate startup niches

takatin | 10 years ago | on: The Golden Age of Walking Bots That Never Arrived

> ....just seems illogical to spend so much effort to develop what is clearly a very limited and complex mode of operation

Quadrupedal motion is for locomotion. Bipedal motion is for transportation.

Bipedal motion frees up two limbs to carry stuff around, open locks, get into cars and drive, move into and out of crowded, people-packed spaces (elevators) where horizontal space is limited but vertical space is plenty and so on.

And since we’re taking about robots, the two freed up limbs need not be “normal” limbs but tools specialised for the job at hand that cannot be used for locomotion purposes (the "arms" can be guns, welding machines or forks for carrying weights)

Also, robots that look and act like humans are an easier sell and selling them is the hardest part about getting these robots mainstream.

Have no doubt, perfecting bipedal motion is a worthwhile endeavor.
