I remember someone giving me a copy of the Internet Yellow Pages back in '96 or so. It looked like the Yellow Pages you get for phones, but it had about 10,000 or so links grouped by category (e.g. astronomy, comics, newsgroups). I would sit down with that and just start exploring.

Later on sites like Yahoo, AltaVista and Lycos would help you find information.

You also had webrings to lead you around.

It used to be pretty fun.

I've been at the same corporation for 13 years now and have encountered this a couple times. I don't know how feasible it is where you work, but what I've done is look for a new position within the company. I really love this company, but there have been times I didn't enjoy the work/team I was on. It could be as simple as changing to a new project, or sometimes even more extreme. I went from being a lead architect on a project to heading over to the DevOps team for a year and giving that a try. I didn't enjoy it so I've since moved over to our Data Science team where I'm an Analytics Architect. Luckily I've been here long enough and gotten to know enough people that they've come and let me know when they have openings on their team and see if I'm interested.

TLDR; See if you can find another team/division within your company to work for.

throwaway_atl | 9 years ago | on: Ask HN: How many of you quit using Facebook or rarely use?

I was on Facebook for a couple years, caught up with all my old High School classmates and a couple University classmates as well. Once I saw how everyone was doing Facebook lost interest to me. I got to the point where the only time I logged in to Facebook was to opt-out of some new option that automatically opted me into. It was easy to give it up and I haven't missed it since. That was probably 6 or so years ago.

The places that match your criteria would be Decatur, Oakhurst, Kirkwood, Candler Park, East Atlanta, Inman Park, Virginia Highlands and Midtown. All of these are pretty walk-able areas and most are within walking distance of MARTA, our public transportation.

I interviewed a few years ago at a Start up in San Francisco; I live and work in Atlanta. One of the things that worried my girlfriend to death was how we would afford to live there.

One of the guys I interviewed with said he spent $1,800 a month to rent a single room in a house with a few other people. He didn't even have his own bathroom. My friend that tried to get me the job out there was paying over $3,000 a month for a small 1 bed room apartment across the street from Twitter.

In Atlanta I was renting a 2,600 sq ft warehouse loft for $1425 a month.

The weirdest part was they offered me the job of a Lead Android Developer for $135k. I make almost $160k here in Atlanta as an Application Architect, and it costs way less to live here. Glad I turned that down.
