I should add to this, as we know file system filters (e.g., anti-virus) slow down access to read (and write, but irrelevant here) files from any file system format on Windows (NTFS, FAT32, exFAT, etc), storing configuration data in configuration files would be less optimal, though minimal in terms of performance (given your app wasn't constantly re-reading the file). This wouldn't be the case with the Registry, as the hives are already open.

However, by default on NTFS, there will be 4096-N bytes of used space each time the specific hive needs to grow to accommodate those 10-100 bytes (this varied historically if we're talking about NT 4 and below, depending on volume size) due to format cluster size.

That said, it is still smaller than 100 files that are 10-100 bytes each taking up 4096 bytes, though with NTFS, those would be stored in the MFT anyways...

Application writers are free to use which ever format they choose on Windows, as well. The Registry is just yet another option -- Microsoft does not force developers to use it. I don't see the Unix convention as the more "liberal" one, here. It typically has _one less_ option.

Went from 230 to ~155 without exercise by calorie restriction alone (600-1200cal/day). It IS possible, though likely unhealthy to accomplish without exercise (I never, ask they say, consulted a doctor prior to the self-imposed restriction).

Exercise was uncomfortable until I had lost weight, now I can do 15+ mile hikes with a 60l backpack.

I don't want to discourage anyone from doing exercise at any time in their goal for weight loss, but it is possible to lose weight by calorie restriction alone.

You _must_ spend some time here. While I'm partial due to being born here, there is so much beauty in nature in any direction you choose to travel on the west side of the Cascades! You could spend years here and not see everything. I'm starting to explore more and more on my own and it is just a wonderland everywhere I go.

NGST started in 1996! I was a 6th grader, at that time! I was fortunate to wake up at 2AM PT so I got to watch the entire webcast. I’m so happy it made it up and they unfurled the solar panel early — I wonder if that was a way to say goodbye while on camera.

No blog; that’s not a bad idea, though. I just post pictures/videos on Instagram like every other good Millennial ;)

Hiking is a way to clear my head. I had an 18 year relationship end not long ago — in 3 & 4th grade I had a teacher who would take us hiking on unofficial field trips. I realized I missed it and the connection with nature plus the isolation one can achieve given you avoid the popular hikes.

My hikes are up at Moss Lake to the end of the allowable NE North Fork Road as well as Marckworth State Forest. It’ll likely snow up here given our elevation but cold doesn’t bother me too much.

This Christmas is significantly different for me. Normally it would be filled with friends and family, but not this year.

I succeeded in hiking >10 miles yesterday and today, legs willing, I'll be at least spending part of the day in the PacNW forests to keep the depression at bay.

JWST was my Christmas present. I'm happy to see we've got final separation and the last view of the telescope. If anything, it's the best thing I could ask for today.

Audio quality on Zoom is downright worse with a hallow, distant sound -- Zoom is/was using the same codec as Skype (Silk) which Teams replaced earlier this year (Satin) which is much more robust and capable.
