I am familiar with PTs and I have been traveling since 2007.

It might be perfectly legal for Russian nationals. Since I am not Russian, I do not know with certainty, which is why I ask if you had checked with an expert.

Is anyone else getting their DigitalOcean IPs banned from certain sites? I use it as a personal VPN sometimes and lately any application hosted on Google App Engine is inaccessible. Sometimes Gmail, Google Analytics and Google Drive are also inaccessible.

The strange part is that the server I am using should not be sending email or doing much really except hosting some git repos and a basic website.

Reading the link supplied by patio11 above (recommended), I wonder if using a hidden volume would constitute an obstruction of customs investigation.

"Don’t Obstruct an Agent’s Investigation

Once it’s clear that a border agent is going to search your device or other possessions, don’t take any steps to destroy data or otherwise obstruct that process. Like lying, knowingly interfering with a border agent’s investigation is a serious crime."

My understanding is that if you do not supply the key they can confiscate and destroy the media, though it will obviously vary from country to country.

The idea behind the hidden volume is that you can provide a key that works for the volume (and hopefully satisfies whoever is inspecting your data) while keeping your information private.

umami | 12 years ago | on: Show HN: A very simple way to share your location

I like how practical it is. I normally use WhatsApp or LINE for this, but even on my laptop the geolocation is fairly accurate.

Bug report:

I get an offset between what I see when I generate a location to what it shows using the URL on an incognito window. Correct one on the left, wrong one on the right:

(Yes, I just shared my location publicly on the internet. I'll be fine.)

umami | 12 years ago | on: How to Buy Bitcoin

There is a ~24% gap between the price you pay in ARS for credit card purchases in USD and what the USD sells for in the black market. This opens up all sorts of arbitrage opportunities that the government struggles to plug.

If you have USD in cash, you can sell them for close to 10 ARS and then buy BTC at about 7.34 exchange rate.

umami | 12 years ago | on: American Airlines earned an enemy

I have recently researched this field out of a personal need and there is a few companies that do fast, inexpensive and insured luggage transport. They even do it door to door, picking up at your home and delivering at your hotel (before you arrive if you send the bags early). They might just need to do more advertising.

In the end I did not try any of them but was pleasantly surprised that there are people working on fixing this.

I have been considering giving LuggageForward[1] a try. They seem to handle the customs aspect in a way that works the same as if you carried the bag with you. Their rates are quite attractive as well.

Disclaimer: no affiliation at all with them. In the end I never tried them because I now travel with carry-on only.
