> How will you know it's a comprehensive exposé?

How about before I purchase there's an excerpt and the number of words that lay ahead? I mean, it couldn't be that hard to distinguish comprehensive articles vs the norm.

> How will you evaluate whether an article is going to be worth the price?

I wouldn't know. And if it wasn't worth it, I probably wouldn't purchase a future piece from the same reporter. That said, there could be a review system. (Just brainstorming here)

un-devmox | 7 years ago | on: Subscription Hell

There's no reason why a publication can't charge more for an in-depth piece. I'd gladly pay far more for a comprehensive exposé.

un-devmox | 7 years ago | on: Subscription Hell

We do the same with app subscriptions. I may go a month or 2 not using an app. It's always made me question the subscription model. There are times I won't subscribe where as I would have purchased the app for a one time fee.

un-devmox | 8 years ago | on: Academic researchers fire latest shots in adblocking arms race

If a website wants to display an ad and ONLY display an ad, I'd have no problem with ad supported content. It's what's happening underneath the ad I have a real problem with.

So, ad blocking isn't really about the ad. I could care less if there is an advertisement next to the news article I'm reading. If only the advertisement was served to me and not whatever other b/s underneath the hood, then I wouldn't have a need for an ad blocker. I wish content producers understood this.

If anyone can get past the headlines, there is some seriously funny satire in the verysmartbrothas subdomain. I love that they show headlines from the Onion, as well.

The theroot.com/tag/news is pretty standard boring news, though.

Overall, seems like a nice site.

un-devmox | 8 years ago | on: Ask HN: Any front end stack recommendation?

To really give a proper recommendation, it would be nice to know more about the interface. Does it need to be a SPA? Really think about this before making a decision and committing to a javascript SPA framework.

If it doesn't need to be a SPA, then just stick with Django + Bootstrap.

Before jumping into a javascript SPA framework,

> The first time we pumped water into our planter, the tube directed a small stream into one spot, completely soaking that area but leaving the rest of the soil dry.

I use irrigation tubing with drip line emitters in my garden. That might be a solution for you. The cool think about the emitters is that they control the flow of water and are easily positioned. I think they start at .5ga/hour on up to 10ga/hour.

Can anyone give some insight that can affirm or refute the claims made in the post?

It appears that the source of KD's view is this article by Nasif Nahle: http://www.biocab.org/carbon_dioxide_geological_timescale.ht...

In response to some of Nahle's research, I found this post here: http://hannahlab.org/climate-skeptics-nasif-nahles-shaky-mat...

As I commented in my first submission of this post, I also want to say:

It's always troubling when my brother, the skeptic, sends me such links. I'm not a scientist (neither is he) so I don't know what to make of such articles.

I always like to explore contrarian views, but this one doesn't sit well with me. It's as if 'skeptics' use such views to roll back all the progress we've made and to slow progress that's needed. It especially boils my blood when 'skeptics' use their argument to somehow tarnish Earth Day as Earth Day is so much more than global warming.

This opinion piece from the local paper sums up my feelings about what Earth Day does represent and what the skeptics ignore: http://planetjh.com/2017/04/18/the-new-west-earth-to-trump/

> If you put content up on a public site, anyone has the right to go and look at it.

Fine.

> Stop complaining when someone saves it.

Fine.

What you don't say is that it is fine to recreate and publish that content against the owner's wishes, especially when said content is copyrighted in one way or another. You're failing to see the whole picture from the content owner's point of view.

un-devmox | 9 years ago | on: Ask HN: What are you working on?

Project: an app that reads pdf table data from blood panels to better display trends in values.

Problem: it sucks to have to flip around various labs to compare results.

Also, trying to make a better search engine for fine-art that is for sale.

Take, for example the referee of the KY game who got his business trolled as well as death threats. I don't think he did anything to "feed" the trolls however he may be irreparably damaged by such people. I don't think you can ignore them and hope they just go away when your business is threatened as well as your life.

un-devmox | 9 years ago | on: Web Scraping: Bypassing “403 Forbidden,” captchas, and more

I haven't had the need to use pause/resume but I do incorporate logic (not necessarily all that complex) in determining which links to crawl. It is very easy to do within each spider especially with how the framework uses generators. It is also easy to extend the pipelines for pre and post processing.

As others have said, managing a project with Scrapy is super easy and highly configurable with sane out of the box settings.

Ergonomically, IMO, using a mouse or track pad is much worse than typing. That said, I am a very deliberate and methodical developer.

un-devmox | 9 years ago | on: Show HN: Nomouse

What always bugs me is that finding complete documentation of keyboard shortcuts for whatever program I'm using can be a battle. Better documentation for many apps would be greatly appreciated.

As a side note, I've battled carpal tunnel and tennis elbo for years. One thing that has helped, besides keyboard shourcuts (and many other things) is using an upright mouse on my right and a track pad on my left.

un-devmox | 9 years ago | on: An epidemic of unnecessary and unhelpful medical treatments

I have, according to my MRI, severe cervical stenosis. I also have carpal tunnel, which was diagnosed first. Based on my symptoms and the awful looking MRI, 4 highly regarded spine surgeons recommended a 2 level fusion right away. The 5th doctor, instead recommended carpal tunnel and ulnar nerve releases. My symptoms abated by 80+% and is something I can live with comfortably.

None of the 4 other doctors even considered dealing with my carpal tunnel first, which, combined with stenosis causes what's called a 'double crush' scenario. Only one surgeon recommended the least invasive and risky procedure for me! Even though a fusion in the future is likely, for now the risk - reward for such a procedure does not warrant immediate action.

I also think it's worth noting that that 5th doctor is the only female of the group. She was the only one that didn't seem gung-ho about the fusion. I'm not saying gender plays a role but...

Thanks for the link.

Interestingly in 2015, AG to be Sessions introduced an amendment that "would have exempted federal agents from the requirement to secure a warrant if the government asserts that an emergency situation exists."

The bill was then withdrawn from consideration.

Is there something similar attached to the current version?
