I believe at least some versions of Google Pixel don't have a camera bump (if you don't mind using a Google phone).

on: Plasticlist Report – Data on plastic chemicals in Bay Area foods
My personal experience is the opposite. There is no control on the produce on grandma's backyard and therefore we have no idea how much chemicals she is using. Probably she doesn't know either. But I'm sure of one thing: she definitely uses chemicals if she wants to eat (or sell) those apples. Chemical-free agriculture is more demanding and the grandma doesn't have an incentive to invest in it. After all, using chemicals is what she learned growing up and therefore is the "traditional" way.

I think these instances that serve a "family" of topics has a great chance of shining within fediverse. I'm rooting for programming.dev to bring together the programming community.

I tried to search with the full URL and it didn't show up. That's why I thought it wasn't the way to do it. But I can now see it when I search for it. So, you are right, it takes some time.

Is there a guide to do this for dummies? Subscribing is one thing, but is it possible to "comment" on another instance's community?
Edit: Figured out myself. It wasn't that difficult :) I agree with others that this needs to be mentioned more often. But, when I searched for "dotnet" in lemmy.world, it didn't return "https://kbin.social/m/dotnet" as one of the search results. Is this due to defederation? Is there a way to add a community using a unique identifier instead of searching for it?

Even though it's possible to subscribe across instances, I think it would make the most sense if there was a single UI that the user can configure like an RSS reader that would bring relevant content from those the user has subscribed to. The user could then read and comment from within the tool (using whichever account they choose).

That's one of the few F1 races I remember. (it wasn't Alonso, though, it was Barrichello). That was dramatic. If I remember correctly, Schumacher gave the trophy to Barrichello at the podium as a gesture to show that he was the one who deserved it and Barrichello couldn't hold back the tears.

on: Slack Price Increase beginning Sep 2022
Probably it's easier to argue this on a small company, where the developers have a bigger impact. But I think in most companies, nobody asks the developers about these things. If the company is already invested in Office, then it's a no brainer to use Teams. It's free and supposedly does everything Slack does. It's well integrated with Outlook/Calendar, etc. When you already have a free solution it's very difficult to ask for a paid service with similar functionality. I don't like using Teams, but that's not a hill I'm willing to die on.
To be honest, the only complain I have about Teams is how resource hungry and unresponsive the application is. But I think it does (or should I say "attempts to do") some things better than Slack. I like the way Teams displays the chat threads as conversations instead of a long, narrow and claustrophobic column on the right, for example. But, again, nobody asks me :)

on: PhD student in Switzerland expelled after criticizing the CCP in Twitter
After reading the English version of the article [0] shared by others in this thread, this look like the adviser has (rightfully or not) panicked and distanced herself from the PhD student (Gerber). The adviser, in her first email, mentions «angry emails from China», but then, when the journalist contacts her, she only refers to a single email from a Chinese doctoral student from Canada.
> The writer [of the email] accuses Gerber of a «racist attack on the Chinese people.» He was referring to a specific tweet: a cartoon that Gerber had posted in response to another user's tweet. It depicted a comic character that had been altered and had stereotyped Chinese features, with yellow skin tone and slit eyes.
> The professor's first email clearly shows that she feared she would no longer be able to obtain a Chinese visa because of Gerber's tweets.
> In the early summer of 2020, Gerber decided to abandon the legal effort. He said he didn't complete the enrollment application because he couldn't find a new adviser: «There was no other professor in the same department with whom I could have finished my work. Changing topics would have meant starting from scratch again after three and a half years. That was out of the question for me.»
The article clearly sides with Gerber on the issue, but I don't think an adviser can be forced to work with a specific PhD candidate. On the other hand, I think this is an important debate:
> [...] Gerber's case demonstrates that China's aggressive foreign policy can in fact influence how academics in Switzerland publicly express themselves, and how they deal with critical comments from their students. It shows that some researchers are willing to restrict their own and others’ activities in order to avoid upsetting China.

on: Zenreader: A 4.7" E-Ink RSS Reader
I don,t have any experience with RSS on eInk, but I would rather that my RSS only contains only the title and the "pitch"(very short summary of the article, or the first paragraph). If I'm interested, with a single keyboard shortcut, my RSS reader fetches the article text for me, so I still don't have to visit the site and read the whole article from within the reader. I use InoReader, but I know NewsBlur (and probably others) has the same (fetch article text) functionality.

This made me think about the Huawei devices that ship without Google Play Services. But, looking at the list of supported devices, I could not see any new Huawei phones. I wonder what the reason for this lack of support could be... Is it because of locked bootloaders?

I have seen projects where the developer(s) would say things like: "This feature request sounds good to have but we don't have the time for this now. So, I'm closing it. Could you please create it again in 6 months?"
I'm lost for words. Can't you just put a tag and park it? What is this obsession about keeping the issue count low?
