that's an interesting anecdote. it was the opposite experience for me. friends and i had yahoo and hotmail emails back then but no one cared about sending emails or replying to them.

yahoo messenger and msn messenger were the reason those were created. i can't recall anyone stressing about it because the person you'd be messaging was with you most of the time...

oh come on. the examples were good so far...

why would i need an app to monitor my sleep if i don't have any sleep disorder or similar? i am putting such app in the "need for attention" category.

workthrowaway | 6 years ago | on: If Logged into Facebook, Oculus VR Data Will Now Be Used for Ads

the problem, as i see it, is not with data collection itself. because the larger public 1. does not care 2. does not seem concerned. 3. the collected data is deemed harmless to the user.

what worries me is the sampling itself. or how diverse the sample is. using VR users data to draw any conclusion is misrepresenting the larger population. now if we are all into VR or use it, this might be different...

curious, have you tried product hunt or similar? it is looking to me that playing the online popularity game has become a key factor for succeeding. if something is popular on product hunt, it is more likely to succeed.

wait what? i seldom hear about instagram. to be honest i am surprised every time it gets mentioned (same thing for snapchat). i thinking you have to be doing particular things or be part of certain spheres to occasionally run into instagram stories.

now, not the same about twitter. twitter is in the news, articles and everywhere. if anything instagram isn't as pervasive as twitter or facebook imo.

funny, i was listening to the go time podcast during my commute this morning and they had the author on...

the author seems to suggest that one should start with an interpreter, then move to a compiler. (read the interpreter book, then read the compiler book...)

i think it really depends on what you are doing. in fact, python is a good example. it compiles to bytecode that is interpreted. it has the both compiling thing going on and then the whole VM thing. i believe java is similar. what i am trying to say is that the line is very blurry nowadays.

i mean, why downvote the GP? there is a good discussion to have here. and i am in fact learning new things. i am all for using one word (less typing) but i am not sure i am ready to see shutdowning...
