This has been well known for many years now amongst those in the digital advertising business. And it's not just Facebook, but Google, Pinterest, Bing, Amazon, etc. They use vague definitions and slightly polished data to embellish the effect on marketing. For example, by Pinterest's definition, they consider a "conversion" to be an impression for an ad that converts to a sale sometime within the next 30 days, regardless if a user interacted with the ad (click, double click, etc) or had been exposed by an ad for the same product on a different site. It's an absurd metric definition.

No digital marketing managers are fooled by this. I mean c'mon, given these companies' track records, you wouldn't blindly trust their performance reporting. Those who manage ad campaigns almost always correlate performance to metrics that are measurable on their end. The most common are ROAS (return on ad spend) and revenue. I think the only victims of this may be the individuals and super small-time marketers with small budgets who are inexperienced or lack measurable business outcomes.

If your primary goal is to minimize the damage of your mistake to maximize your political gains, then yes, you're right.

When dealing with actual, non-hypothetical humans, you should be able to set your ego aside to meet them on a human level and address them as such.

Too many in this thread fear of being perceived as weak, but I find that being an unapologetic asshole is just as bad.

One of the inspection checklist items:

Measure the clearance between the flapper bushings at both locations on each engine bleed air 5th stage check valve. If the clearance between the flapper bushings is a minimum of 0.004 inch (0.102 mm) at both locations, the engine bleed air 5th stage check valve at that location has passed this inspection.

I knew that aviation engineering dealt with tight tolerances, but boy, it must be difficult to make a call like that when you're dealing with thousandths of an inch. Do field technicians have dependable tools and methods of measuring with such high degrees of precision?

wwv25 | 5 years ago | on: Stop ‘Using’ “Useless” ‘“‘Quotes’”’

Just checked for myself, and you're correct. OP could have shortened the post by 90% if they just pointed to this fact. But while technically valid, for any reasonable HTML document, you'll run into cases where quotes are required. Example:

    <div class=foo bar>
At which point, if you use quotes once in your document, you should really use them throughout.

The argument for using invalid HTML because many other websites implement invalid HTML is not a strong argument imo. Modern browsers are very forgiving in this regard but we and developers should still strive for consistency through explicitly defined values.

Thanks for the writeup, Dan. This is how I feel about most code reviews. It's difficult to comprehend all the code and focus on the _actual_ problem being solved rather than naming conventions and syntax. And yes, I realize the irony by posting a tangentially-related comment on HN.

San Francisco marathon isn't generally regarded as an elite event, let alone "famous". Most metropolitan road races are around this price point. Especially pricier the closer you register to race-date.

But to your point, there are many smaller races that are cheaper. But often these are less organized, fewer road closures, less exciting, fewer perks; you get what you pay for.
