on: After luring customers with low prices, Amazon stuffs Fire TVs with ads
Have you found a way to block ads while preserving the voice recognition feature? I have a C1 and a C2 on which I have successfully blocked all ads, but I can no longer use voice recognition for things like searching. It's a fair trade, but I wish I could have both.

on: Steam Deck: First Anniversary
It's not, the steamdeck subreddit is full of these people. But I think the Steam Deck overall is much more attractive than a gaming laptop, and once you get a Deck, you don't want to then reinvest into a laptop powerful enough to compete, and so you end up with weird setups like this.

Yes it does.

What adblocker do you use? I would love to cancel my premium subscription. I used to use vanced on android, but I really like iOS since I've switched.

on: Fastmail vs. ProtonMail: A Comparison
They obviously chose not to offer end-to-end before, but now they can't even if they wanted to. So it's a distinction without a difference. It's open by default.

I'm a longtime fastmail customer, and I like the service, but they still have no answer for Australia's Access and Assistance Bill, aside from all the other privacy disadvantages they have against Protonmail.

I know I wouldn't build something like this, but many people do, there are many Strava browser extensions out there. I used VeloViewer for many years before I dumped Strava altogether.

Thanks for the reply! There is SO much to learn in this hobby. I'll definitely be following this project.

How is it offering 'private' communications on the 33cm band? Does this band even offer good performance in hilly or mountainous terrain? These would be short range line of sight only type devices, correct? I'm still fairly new to amateur radio so I could be off. I don't see the advantage of this over something like APRS on 2M, with the exception that you don't need a license.

That doesn't change the fact that you need google play services for most of the phone to work. It can be done, but it's a huge pain in the ass.

on: Should you be concerned about LastPass uploading your passwords to its server?
Have you tried 1Password lately? They used to be trash, but I use them on mac, windows and android and it is far superior to last pass in almost every regard now.

Just a little PSA, 1Password7 let's you run entirely on local vault files. I have a NAS at home (Synology, but you could use whatever) to sync that vault file between it and all my devices, mobile included, only on wifi. I subscribe to 1Password's monthly model with the cloud services, but I just don't use any of them, and they have settings on every client which let you choose the default vault for saving, and I just use the local one. Best in class apps, local password storage only. Best of both worlds, unless there is some angle I'm missing.

on: A Week on the Wrist: Apple Watch Series 4
The tracking issues have largely been cleaned up on the Fenix 5. It works well enough day to day for me, showing notifications from apps on my phone, allows me to blacklist apps, and has all of the features I need as a "serious" runner and backpacker/hunter. The Apple Watch isn't playing in that space though.

on: DuckDuckGo's bang
I am a long time DDG user, going on 4 years? I am just now starting to revert back to google more and more as I start to find their results lacking. The main problem I have with bangs is that my mental mode for searching is always going directly to the search string first. The friction of having to back out of that and insert a bang is too much. I would love to be able to add the bang at the end, as it is often then that I realize a particular search string would be better suited for google or some other service (but mostly google). I'll send them that suggestion.

I use nvALT, Todoist, and a calendar to organize everything. I don't have a good system for writing the notes specifically though.

on: Ask HN: Do you use budgeting software?
You could read OP two ways. One, that OP is trying to avoid having login credentials for his financial institutions saved in the cloud. Two, that OP is trying to avoid storing a detailed log of their purchase and financial history in the cloud. YNAB4 satisfies both of those concerns (despite what the other comment says, Dropbox is not required, any cloud sync will work, as long as you don't use the mobile app), their new SAAS app only satisfies concern one.

They discontinued YNAB4 so unless you already have a license then you're out of luck. Their new system is SAAS.

on: Ask HN: What are the best hacks to fight depression?
Mindfulness and Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy did it for me. You need a framework for challenging your wrong thinking. Learn to take a universal perspective, root out the self pity and resentment, and foster responsibility for yourself. I found a therapist who worked me through REBT and connected me to a fantastic meditation teacher. Obviously you need to take care of your body too, with diet, exercise and above all, the most stringent of sleep hygiene habits (probably no drugs or alcohol either, sorry). Put me 5 hours of bad sleep a night and I'll be suicidally upset about "everything" at the end of the week.
