Ask YC: Large inexpensive wall mount computer displays?

12 points| davidu | 15 years ago | reply

We were going to use a TV to display a few monitoring and stats overviews in the office but most TVs are over-built in the areas we don't care about, and under-built in the areas we do.

Anyone know of a rather large (40" or larger) display that is inexpensive and just has an HDMI, DVI or even VGA hookup?

I figure tradeshow booths and similar must use something but I'm not sure what to search for.

Thanks!

We use the same display as the Panic folks for this: http://www.panic.com/blog/2010/03/the-panic-status-board/

Aside of a hiccup upon delivery, it works well, has a built in computer(!), and is built to stay on 24/7.

Very cool. Removing the need for the computer definitely makes the increased price much more palatable along with the more industrial design and use case.

I see cheap LCD TV's of 40" or more for sale at Fry's for $600 or so all the time. I think that's your answer. As for what's used at trade shows, just that, large TV's, and they're rented at exorbitant rates!

Going to be next to impossible to find something without audio or a remote, and if you do, it will be a "monitor" designed for high-end use and will be way to expensive.

Dynex at bestbuy 42" is around $500. It's got a vga and hdmi. Works nicely with my computer.

What kind of resolution do you need?

I think the sweet spot is 1920 x 1080, which is 1080p.

Not as cheap as I was hoping for. This thing doesn't even need audio or a remote. :-)
