I'm on a capped internet connection and need to limit my bandwidth usage as much as possible.

In the old days, that meant installing a transparent proxy using Squid.

If you don't already use one, install an adblocker such as µblock.

You could disable JavaScript too, but I don't think the web is usable without it.

You could also investigate Opera Mini, I think they download and compress the web-pages before sending them to you (however they have access to all your history, nothing is free in this world).
