Ask HN: In-depth sites for various industries' news?

161 points| gilbetron | 3 years ago | reply

During the ship-stuck-in-the-canal days, I was introduced to freightwaves.com, and another HN post along the line introduced me to mining.com. What are some interesting, in-depth sites similar to those but for other industries? Like for solar, wind, and nuclear, for instance? I can google them, but I like hearing recommendations from people that are in the industry!

We run a network of news sites for executives in various industries. They’re free to read without registration:

Waste & Recycling - https://www.wastedive.com/

Electric Utility - https://www.utilitydive.com/

Marketing - https://www.marketingdive.com/

And dozens more. Full list at https://www.industrydive.com/publications

Wow this is awesome. What I would give to access your internal records mapping out all the different competitors for each industry you cover XD

For many years, and likely still today, the most in depth site for mining events (all 'facts', zero editorial) was what is now the S&P subscription service:

Metals & Mining: Global Market Intelligence

https://www.spglobal.com/marketintelligence/en/campaigns/met...

if that's your sphere of interest it's worth a trial - it logged every global mineral lease detail change and summarised every public market release ( change of board, acquisition of sub company, financial report, tech report, above threshold share assignments, etc ) for global mineral companies across Australia, Canada, South Africa, South America, (and the smaller US minerals market) etc stock exchanges with semi decent (former) USSR | Chinese coverage and bound it together with GIS, timelines, etc.

I'm no longer affiliated (for more than a decade) .. but it was a source for mining.com stories and heavily used by serious investors.

( all 'facts' .. it's a demonstrably provable fact that Company XYZ released a statement on the Toronto TSX stating the aquisition of leases 150 km NW of CrazyGully, Novada, and a similarly provable fact that former owner DEF-Co released a Technical Report with listed sample results.

It may later become a fact that the authors of that Technical Report fudged some numbers .. these are all facts and all reported | timelined.

We never stated that Ground X had resources Y - only the reported history of who reported what and what third parties did the work, etc )

The sources below are almost entirely submarine articles, but that's how trends arise. Remember hearing about ransomware attacks in the news? That was a purposeful choice a group of Cybersecurity companies chose to begin drumming up from 2019 onwards.

Govt Specific:

Government Tech Acquisition - https://www.nextgov.com/

GSA Specific - https://www.govexec.com/

DoD Policy and Acquisition - https://www.defenseone.com/

SLED Acquisition - https://www.route-fifty.com/

Hill specific stuff (ignore Magazine, Opinion, and Personal Profile articles, those are all submarine articles) - https://www.politico.com/

Cybersecurity Industry:

DarkReading (almost entirely submarine articles, but a good way to get a pulse on upcoming cybersecurity trends) - https://www.darkreading.com/

SDxCentral (same as darkreading, but better brand) - https://www.sdxcentral.com/

Media/News:

Poynter - https://www.poynter.org/

Columbia Journalism Review - https://www.cjr.org/

If I'm not mistaken CJR also has a podcast that I remembered liking more than the NYT or WSJ podcasts coming out at the same time (last I listened to it was 4 years ago, not sure about how good it is now).

In optics:

Laser Focus World by Endeavour Media, the company also offers paid market studies. https://www.laserfocusworld.com

Photonics Media, also have great webinars. https://www.photonics.com

Photonics Focus, the magazine of SPIE, freely downloadable. https://spie.org/news/photonics-focus/novdec-2022

Optics and Photonics News (OPN) by Optica (formerly OSA) https://www.optica-opn.org/home/

There are many others but these are the biggest ones that I read and are not too specific to any one application or industry.

Financial reports and news of companies and stocks (mostly US, I think), focusing on values and fundamentals. I found other similar sites to be too much about short term trends and technical analysis.

American Federation of Musicians: https://www.afm.org/

Unionized musicians that work most Broadway-style shows, orchestras, operas and professional recording operations (jingles, film, etc…)

This is a great chance to give a shout-out to the Trade Journal Cooperative https://www.tradejournalcooperative.com/ -- not web sites, but it actually delivers paper magazines from interesting industry verticals. Everything from bowling alleys to semiconductors. Also, the covering letter from the editor is wryly observed and usually witty.

For more irreverent/surreal/humorous takes on the auto industry, I can recommend The Autopian, a venture started by former Jalopnik writers:

https://www.theautopian.com/

(Jalopnik was sort of the original irreverent/surreal/humorous auto blog but it hasn't faired well in the various changes of hands for Gawker)

I know of https://autonews.io/ mentioned before. They look unrelated but would you know of any connection except for their similar domain?
