My personal exit was to (accidentally) build something successful in a different field. I still use tech, but only in support for that business. There's a world of difference between churning out code for a corporation, and writing scripts to support a clear business need. It's how I rediscovered my love for computing.

This would be my dream. What other field did you enter?

As you gain professional experience, you will be pushed towards management positions that involve less and less technical work over time. Once you haven’t installed a development environment on your professional laptop for a year, you are ready to simply become a manager in another field. Maybe not in the top companies but management experience is management experience.

That would be my safest plan, though it’s not very exciting professionally.

Alternatively I could find an IT position in a company working in another field, and try to slowly do less IT and more other things.

Last plan is to somehow find 2 billion euros and do whatever I want instead.
