Ask HN: How do you find and apply for startup grants/support?

Many countries, cities, or industries offer support (financial or otherwise) for local startups or startups building something related to some goal, for example sustainability or climate. How do you become aware of these programs and apply? I'm in the Netherlands, but curious in general.

Look up your local and national (and in your case, supranational) schemes to support innovation, get on their mailing lists, talk to other people who have used them, tips and tricks and pitfalls, etc.

Also be prepared to warp and mold your ideas to fit the available schemes. For example we funded our home heating control via IoT and security and occupancy detection. It needed all of those, but it was not obvious why we'd be fitting stuff in London bus shelters unless you squinted sideways!
