Ask HN: Anyone Seeing YT ads related to chats on ChatGPT?

3 points| guhsnamih | 1 month ago

I have encountered ads on YouTube that closely match what I think I am only asking on ChatGPT.

For example, just today I asked ChatGPT if I am speaking too much and an hr or so later I see a sponsored video on YouTube about exposing your weakness by speaking too much.

Is there a direct link between the two, am I hallucinating or it's a divine intervention?

I am on FF on Linux and I have ChatGPT installed on my Android phone. If that makes any difference.

Thanks

I think that would imply that OpenAI is selling information to Google for advertising and in return get kickbacks. While that's conceivable, we also know that OpenAI has declared their intent to do ads themselves and so are going to be competing with Google and Meta and others.

I think what's more likely is that the question you asked is in the ether and it has expressed itself in your mind and elsewhere and so you are being exposed to such ads. Amplifying further could be that since it is on your mind, you have also touched on other closely related searches or sites that DO participate in AdWords, hence you seeing them on YT.

Why not both? Profit at both ends. Selling your data to other ad outfits doesn’t decrease the likelihood you click their own ads.

Like the car you want to buy. Suddenly you start seeing it everywhere. Hopefully that's what it is.

Have you spoken to anyone about this in person or on a social app like Discord? Could be a coincidence of timing, but also I have found recently that ads have been significantly more blatant and aggressive in their targeting. I've gotten sponsored Instagram posts for things that aren't really a product like a news article covering something I was discussing with people in a Discord voice chat.

You may want to look into Carl Jung and synchronicity.
