I have recently been through this.

Google took 3 months. 1 month was from the virtual onsite final interviews to the Hiring Committee decision. It was a miserable month and even my wife hated Google by the end.

Second was for a Director of Engg position at a mid sized company. It took 2 months and finally I had to force them to answer. It was a company with weak leadership and it showed in their inability to make a decision.

100-xyz | 4 years ago | on: Ask HN: What would a Facebook that isn't evil look like?

If anyone is interested in getting together, brain storming and working towards a startup in this space - I am interested.

I particularly like "I'd like a system that acts as my own portal to all those systems, and allows me to follow people on the Fediverse, Facebook, Instagram, RSS feeds, you name it; and is easy to expand to support new things, but also gives me more control over my feed" by mcv here.

100-xyz | 4 years ago | on: China bans for-profit school tutoring in sweeping overhaul

I see decent bit of parallels with such cram schools and Leetcoding for FAANG applications.

I just completed a final interview round for Google and went through 300+ problems on LC. It improved my test taking ability a lot, but in the actual job will be completely useless. Similar to the Chinese children, this artificial testing is getting more and more competitive.

Just wanted to bring it up.

100-xyz | 4 years ago | on: Ask HN: How did you validate your webapp product/market fit?

I am still in this process.

My first launch was here on Hacker News, but at that time it was a prototype with no way to register and log in. Interest was very good. Then launched on Product Hunt where I got my first 20 registered users. Beyond that it has been posting the animations created on 4chan and other social websites.

I usually iterate on the features, look n feel etc. Try an idea, see if it sticks. If it doesnt, then discard it. I also have Discord channels that users can get help or chat on.

The product is an animation editor with no code or formulas https://toonclip.com

100-xyz | 4 years ago | on: Ask HN: Who doesn’t want to go back to the office?

I live in Fremont and had a job in Los Angeles. Had to fly in every week. It was exhausting. Then Covid came and got rid of the flight and commute. It was awesome.

But after a year of being cooped up with a wife and a 4 year old, I yearn to be back at the office about twice a week.

100-xyz | 4 years ago | on: Five efficient ways to destroy your tech project

Can add another one that I was guilty of for several of my past startups. Believe in 'Make it and they will come.' Those went absolutely nowhere.

For my most recent startup ToonClip, I do a decent bit of marketing on 4chan, twitter, linkedin and the traction though not great is much better.

100-xyz | 5 years ago | on: Ask HN: Which book/essay changed your life?

"Your money or your life?" this changed my life.

I went through the calculations in the book and it was eye opening for me. From then I did a 10 month 5000 mile hike and then lived in China for 10+ years. Absolutely made my life much happier and content.

100-xyz | 5 years ago | on: Monolith First (2015)

I work for a small company that uses microservices architecture. The product is simple where a user registers, enters preferences, selects from courses and submits a form. A monolith would be doable with 5 good engineers. Instead we have about 50 engineers+QA releasing bug filled code.

The company's design philosophy is based more on what is fashionable that what is suitable.

100-xyz | 5 years ago | on: Ask HN: How to self-learn graphics programming?

I was in a similar journey while working on my startup ToonClip.com which deals heavily with graphics.

There are 2 different areas. One is the geometry and the math. Second is the libraries that make the graphics.

What was fun for me, was thinking of an idea eg. make a circle move along a given path. Then evaluating the different libraries to see how to achieve it. Then, when the libraries themselves needed modification, jump into the mathematics, geometry and algebra. I did not read books but just looked up articles and videos that cover the topics of interest.

Its a lot of fun that combines math, art and programming.

Wish you lotsa success and fun :-)
