on: How to enter into ML?
It may be easier to get a position as a more general purpose engineer (full stack or whatever you’re most comfortable in) with a team that has ML engineers, and work your way into the role you want from there.

on: Ask HN: How do you store photos and videos?
I built a media pc with a 2tb drive for continuously uploading to backblaze, google photos, and an attached 2tb usb drive (it’s also a Plex server, which comes in handy for viewing the videos). I have google photos on my phones but mainly I periodically pull them off the phones and move them to the media pc, along with photos from my dslr.
Since my wife and I both have our own desktops it made sense to build the media pc to have a central place for photos and videos.

on: GIMP development - What’s the point?
Maybe if he could sit down with every potential user of GIMP I could sympathize. But the truth is when I sit down to do anything in GIMP, my frustration grows and grows. I've spent dozens of hours using it and it still leaves me in agony every time.

on: Is Caddy Free?
Do we need heart to heart talks about why someone charges for a service or why people need money to support themselves? When I buy cereal at a grocery store I don't need the clerk to huddle with me and explain how they arrived at the price or why there's need for a price at all. Just put a price on it and we'll pay it if it's worth the price.

The list wasn't just longer, it was entirely different. Yesterday the comparison chart listed engine features, now it lists premium services.

I don't read a lot of books and this one is enormous but I did read it cover to cover. In its best moments it's genius, in its worst moments it's either dry or over my head. But it was a combination of delightful to read, educational, and mind blowing in parts.

I've watched the first four seasons of Fringe and I don't think the protagonists ever tortured anyone.

Don't the bullet points all repeat themselves. It could have been just:
* Software products are being dumbed down for novices at the expense of power users
* OSX isn't getting enough attention because the iPhone and iPad are so big now

on: The Simple Math Behind Early Retirement
There's something to "live like no one else so later you can live like no one else" though. This is pretty much "live like no one else for the rest of your life". I mean..wouldn't you rather work a little longer so you can increase your lifestyle in retirement?

Look, you can't convince me life is worse in America than other countries. I watch House Hunters International, I see the size of those kitchens.

on: Why everyone loves the iPad mini (even though the screen sucks)
My iPad Mini arrived last weekend and I love it. He's absolutely right about the size and weight being the killer feature. Since I haven't used a retina display for long periods of time, I don't even notice the lower quality of the screen. I'll probably get a larger one at some point but I'm satisfied with my choice to start with the Mini.

Just kidding, this list is ridiculous and he should have never married if this is what he was expecting.

As a conservative and a software engineer, it's heartening that they at least had a plan and tried something. The fact that it was poorly implemented and unstable doesn't surprise me. Most last minute projects end up that way.

on: The Electronics Store of the Future and Grand St.
You might think we've all moved on from price being important because everyone you've talked to has a lot of money. But there are plenty of hardware nerds who are also price conscious.
