Even if it is, Alex had an awful experience and feels like a victim. If Square can't do anything about the outcome, they can at least offer a better explanation and tips going forward. Communication seemed to be the biggest issue here.

And when do we finally decide that those principles are worth fighting for? When do we decide that "absolutely nothing you can do" is unacceptable?

Cryode | 12 years ago | on: Show HN: I hacked my microwave with a Raspberry Pi

My parents still use a microwave they bought before I was born (I'm 28), and it does exactly this, except without the power dial. It's one analog dial for time -- turn it to start, turn it back to zero to stop. I miss having it around.

Also, just as a general user experience thing, not having labels can be detrimental if the field's purpose is forgotten or unknown. Having a placeholder is fine if there is no value in the field, but if I submit a long form after filling it out, only to be shown an error, what if I don't remember what that particular field was for?

I'm with you - the perceived values of websites/businesses like this are astounding. Somehow founders and VCs walk away with a bunch of money after acquisitions, but what's Yahoo going to do? Seems like a large sum for an acqui-hire.

Then again I'm a giant noob when it comes to startups, funding and acquisitions. Regardless, the numbers are out of this world.

Cryode | 13 years ago | on: Ask HN: how strong is your focus when you are coding?

I'm 28. My focus sucks overall, but a recent improvement I've made is the type of music / noise I have while working. I switched from music I really enjoy and tend to sing/hum with, to electronic music with little to no vocals and upbeat tempos. My mind focuses less on the words and music, and allows me to think more about what I'm doing.

I've also tried some white noise creators, like this one for coffee shop sounds: http://coffitivity.com/ Personally the techno music works better, but you may be different.

Cryode | 13 years ago | on: Show HN: My seven minute workout timer evening project

Seems the 7 minutes was taken pretty literally in this app. The article suggests doing each exercise for 30 seconds, followed by 10 seconds of rest, for a total of 7:50. I was confused by each exercise started at :26 and rest at :8.

Would definitely be interested in downloading and tweaking this for my own. Github, perhaps?

Edit: FYI, don't release production code with console.log() if you can help it. :-p

I'm grateful for the Tower GUI app. Just wish it would tell me what commands it was using, since I'd like to know.

It always drove me nuts that I had to repeatedly set my news feed BACK to 'Most Recent'.
