ZipCordManiac | 14 years ago | on: Tim O'Reilly: I am really starting to hate Mac OS X.

Apple should at least give people the option to put an older operating system on a newer system. Similar to how PC vendors offer XP or W7. I tried to install my Leopard family pack on a computer that shipped with snow leopard - no dice. With the way things are, I'll never buy a new Mac, as I refuse to "upgrade" to Lion.

This runs great. Unlike iTunes it doesn't check my entire damn music library on the NAS every single time or have tons of bloatware like Ping, iTunes Store, etc. iTunes took on average 3-5 minutes just to start. This starts quickly and immediately loads my music. If it gets updated with some decent features I'd use it exclusively. Another solution people might be interested in is Clementine.

ZipCordManiac | 14 years ago | on: Why the Mac App Sandbox makes me sad

As a longtime Mac user (since the 80s) , it pains me to think my next purchase won't be a Macintosh, but I can't ignore the writing on the wall any longer. Apple used to be about freedom and creativity - now they just want to give the best user experience while keeping users safe and maximizing profits. Not an all-together horrible goal, but also not the kind of computer I want to use. I want a computer, not a toaster or a microwave. People have for years called mac kid computers, and I never really agreed with them before now. This kind of development really puts the final nail in the coffin though. These computers are made for people who simply want a locked down boring experience. It's a sign of the times, just look at the TSA.

Wow, it's really sad to see somebody so completely broken and brainwashed that he'll literally report his every move to authorities. If the government was monitoring his home with an iMac this would be right out of 1984.

ZipCordManiac | 14 years ago | on: Dell: death of the PC is "complete nonsense"

What they are saying is it's the death of the PC for casual people, which I somewhat agree with. There will always be desktops around, no doubt, but will the general population still be buying them in 10 years when they can just hookup a tablet to their big screen ? I don't think so, no reason.

Do they not offer any kind of bargains for such a huge purchase/company ? I'd think Amazon would work with Netflix to offer at least somewhat competitive prices. I am just talking out of my backside here, but it seems to me like they probably are getting a better deal then the average joe running an EC2 instance.

ZipCordManiac | 14 years ago | on: Netflix stock plunges as subscribers quit

I am a HUGE media consumer, trendsetter, and generally on the bleeding edge of entertainment in my group of friends. I am their EXACT target, they just don't know how to market to me. I am the one telling my friends about new movies and tech, making sure they see what is good. I would without a doubt spend much MUCH more money then your average consumer if they made it available at reasonable speeds in a DRM-free format. (xVid, MP4, Mkv) I want to pay, and support the artists, and 'own' the material to move around on my own computers. The studios however won't let me unless I purchase physical content and do the rips myself. So most of the time I only up getting the blu-ray months down the road if it's something special. The only person who 'wins' in this situation is me, and I wish this weren't the case.

ZipCordManiac | 14 years ago | on: Netflix stock plunges as subscribers quit

The movie companies are just shooting themselves in the foot. If I can't find it on Netflix or download a copy for a reasonable price (I'd pay a couple bucks to download a movie and have permanent copy...), I'll torrent it. Their loss.

ZipCordManiac | 14 years ago | on: Carol Bartz: Yahoo "f---ed me over"

I think we just have to agree to disagree on this point. I have nothing against somebody stating their position with emotion, but this was vulgar and designed to do nothing but escalate the situation. She didn't use profanity while making a great argument, she used it to directly insult her previous employer. So things didn't work out for her at Yahoo, and she got fired on the phone - yeah, it sucks. It doesn't give her the right to act like a spoiled brat in public. I'd expect better from my children then how this woman acts in public. She should be embarrassed. If she really wanted to get back at them there was much better and more professional ways to go about it. I stand by my reasoning that this kind of vulgarity used in public should be shameful, and I'm no prude.

ZipCordManiac | 14 years ago | on: Carol Bartz: Yahoo "f---ed me over"

You probably should have chosen somebody who wasn't a complete douche bag to make your example. Joe Biden cussing like that makes him look like a complete fool. I am all for cussing when situation is right, but this (and Biden's mockery) is just vulgar for the sake of being vulgar. There is a time and a place for vulgarity, press releases is not one of them. It just makes you look foolish, easily manipulated emotionally, and unprofessional in my eyes.

ZipCordManiac | 14 years ago | on: Carol Bartz: Yahoo "f---ed me over"

I wouldn't treat a male any differently. It's low class. I don't recall any major CEO's on the front page of tech sites cussing before this. Ever. It shows a poor lack of control. What is said behind doors, not to the press, is something else entirely. That's not even touching on the professionalism of publicly calling out a previous employer. Talk about burning bridges and ruining a reputation.

ZipCordManiac | 14 years ago | on: Carol Bartz: Yahoo "f---ed me over"

I have seen a whole lot of this woman cussing in the news lately. The image she puts out is low class, and she didn't make the company money. It's no mystery why she was fired. There is a time and place for profanity, and it's very rarely in the professional setting.
