on: NASA announces Boeing Starliner crew will return on SpaceX Crew-9
Flying Blind by Peter Robison isn't exactly the book you have in mind, but I did enjoy it and it's the closest I know of

on: Why are most sofas so bad?
I am happy with my Lovesac sofa, too. It was expensive, but I can't think of another product I could expect to be as happy with, so Lovesac seems to be in a class of their own and can demand whatever price they want.
In particular, it's comfortable, well built, but not bulky. I can take it apart move it in my regular sized SUV if needed. I move a lot, and eventually grew tired of bulky things that were difficult or impossible to move without professional help.
I also tried a Burrow sofa which has the same modular properties, but it was not comfortable at all and I had to return it

I got one for just $700 over MSRP in Pasadena recently. Had to visit multiple dealerships and haggle them down quite a bit (They wanted $5000 over). Although not easy, it's possible now, they aren't as unobtainable as they once were.

And it has affordable housing! The population is about half of its peak, so there is more housing than needed, the opposite of many places in the U.S.

on: Ask HN: What happened to Magic, the text-message concierge?
Thanks all for the warnings and information. I've been using Magic on and off for the last four years, mostly for travel planning. Their quality of work is not what it used to be.
I went to remove my credit card information from their records today, and it turns out you cannot actually do this yourself which is a red flag. I had to open a request with them to do it.

It works pretty well if you turn off JavaScript entirely. I use the "Toggle JavaScript" Chrome extension (by "dsmith" in the chrome web store) for that.

on: Programmers are confessing their sins to protest a broken job interview process
Seems overly harsh. Why is the actual code, "len(s)" so much worse than your suggestion of "length(s)"?

on: Why are the Microsoft Office file formats so complicated? (2008)
"A lot of the complexities in these file formats reflect features that are old, complicated, unloved, and rarely used. They’re still in the file format for backwards compatibility, and because it doesn’t cost anything for Microsoft to leave the code around."
That's not really true. It is not free to leave old code around.

I see the same type of problems all the time. f.lux flashes between full blue light and the filter for a few seconds whenever I connect or disconnect my external monitor from my MacBook.

Your opening animation is too long. I was tempted to just close the tab and read the next HN story before it finished.

on: How to Use LinkedIn to Become a Networking Superstar
The article contradicts itself. In one paragraph it says to list exactly two recent jobs, and a paragraph later it suggests listing them all.
