I recently posted a job opening. When I reached out to one of the applicants, he said he was worried that his knowledge wasn't as deep in some of the areas I wanted.
That honesty got him an on-site interview.
That interview, reference checks, etc., got him the job. He starts on Monday.

Sounds like the answers are split into two camps:
* be a fanboy and visit corporate campuses
* be a tourist and go run around somewhere
Not being a fanboy myself, I'd vote to spend the day in Santa Cruz. Stay for the sunset. Much more interesting than Google.
