Unbelievably hopeful and tragic at the same time. That he could learn to control electrode implants to communicate (in an albeit "rudimentary" way) is just incredible, but I can't imagine the feelings of unfairness at such a young age for him. Hopefully there's a path here to help others communicate much longer than they'd otherwise be able to.

One of the other sentences he made out was "I love my cool son," which hit particularly close to home given I'm the same age as well. Oy.

Finally! A way to directly support MDN and the great things Mozilla does. I remember emailing them over a year ago about their broken previous $5 subscription and getting 0 response back which was perfectly Mozilla.

I'm not optimistic at all about a subscription service for "web developers who want to customize their MDN experience" as an actual value add, as this seems negligible, but I am overall as 1. it's a step in the right direction for new ways to monetize Mozilla and 2. it sounds like they're listening to feedback and willing to iterate on it.

andrewgioia | 4 years ago | on: Lego has changed since we were kids (2014)

100% agreed. Our 5yo started getting into them about a year ago as we sunsetted the Duplo bricks and they're by far his and my favorite toys.

We have a bunch of Star Wars sets and while the builds themselves are great, 90% of the fun has been breaking them down and building our own ships and designs. I watch him completely immersed in the world when he makes and flies these ships around, it's amazing. I hope we're still doing it when he's 13 too.

Fedora 35 is essentially fully supported and I believe their recommended distro[1]. I installed this to test it out and OOTB is was perfect, I may switch to this full time as it has the best vanilla gnome experience too (IMO). The other one they indicate that has near full support after install is Ubuntu 21.04.

FWIW I've been using elementaryOS 6.1 for most of the time and it's been really nice too. Full disclosure though it was pretty DIY; wifi did not work right away (I had to upgrade the kernal), I had to install some software to enable the fingerprint reader, and I needed to manually enable fractional scaling.

I definitely recommend it to run Linux, the community is fantastic and another strong selling point.

Love my Framework. Barring Apple's recent move away from the touchbar it's honestly the first machine I've been excited about in 6 or so years. The build quality is great, love the simplicity and design of the expansion ports, and the repair/upgrade-ability is huge. It's gotten me back into using Linux as a daily driver.

I really hope they stay true to their vision and that this means expanding it into other consumer product lines.

Yeah you keep linking that too, it says market manipulation/schemes are illegal.

It's absolutely unclear if that's the case here, and in fact based on the few extreme times short selling has been illegal I'd say this definitely does not get there.

andrewgioia | 5 years ago | on: Privacy is the most important concept of our time

Really insightful comment and I could not agree anymore. Reading your story really puts it into perspective what we've grown to accept as normal.

It's unfortunate that the solution seems to be to just leave—(I don't think stopping and trying to make a friend is realistic the vast majority of the time, or even safe sometimes)—and I'm realizing I'm at that same conclusion.

andrewgioia | 6 years ago | on: Twitter locks WikiLeaks account days before Assange's extradition hearing

A law like this could only apply to websites operating at a certain scale, exceeding some revenue threshold, owned by publicly traded companies, or some other proxy to get only the sites we’re talking about here. This is just off the top of my head too, I’m sure much smarter people can craft a framework much better than OP’s which is already a very good one.

andrewgioia | 6 years ago | on: In Defense of Richard Stallman

Holy strawman, batman! This is so bad I felt inclined to comment.

Neither OP nor RMS said "child sexual abuse is okay" or wants to say that--you know that, right? Why are you phrasing it that way?

The only rational interpretation is that you're deliberately misrepresenting things, which is ironically one of the main thrusts of the linked article. The language used here is important, as are forums like this one.

andrewgioia | 6 years ago | on: You Can Now Tell Facebook to Delete Its Internal Record of Your Face

Can anyone figure out how to actually turn this off? After bouncing around in Facebook's help docs I found the steps[1] but don't see the option.

Click the down arrow at the top right, then Settings. There _should_ be a "Face Recognition" item in the left but not for me.

This is so frustrating and part of me thinks they just disable this for a bit so 90% of people forget.

andrewgioia | 6 years ago | on: Give Your Yard Back to Nature

I used to really dislike it specifically because of the white flowers and how they attracted bees, but have since made an almost 180 on it. As Isamu said, it has great nitrogen-fixing benefits and I'm now trying to encourage the bees.

andrewgioia | 6 years ago | on: Give Your Yard Back to Nature

Really agree with the premise here. I came to a somewhat similar conclusion (concession?) this year after spending tons of time and energy "perfecting" a couple acre yard we moved into. The kicker this year was spotting a weed growing through a crack in the concrete floor of my detached garage--no sun, very little water, and this thing was still growing!

While not mowing is nonstarter in my and essentially every other neighborhood, I've completely come to terms with the clover and random broadleaf weeds we have, they're part of the yard. Trying to get that picturesque carpet led me down a path of using questionable chemicals and spending tons of unnecessary time killing native vegetation that _wanted_ to grow and has thrived here in western PA.

I'm now consigning certain sections to wildflowers and just overseeding the rest of the yard with native grasses in the fall to naturally work up the more desirable stuff and thicken it. No more chemicals, and mowing slightly more frequently has also helped keep the dandelions down. Slowly I'll mulch other areas, especially around the trees, and try to put in some more low-maintenance landscaping like this article suggests.

andrewgioia | 6 years ago | on: Retail stores use Bluetooth beacons to track customers

Yes absolutely, everyone else is gathering this apparently and it has to just be assumed now. I hadn't thought about it with the "facebook is listening" stuff but this makes way more sense.

It's particularly frustrating given how hard I try to disassociate myself and my family from "data brokers" and then I read another thing like this.

andrewgioia | 6 years ago | on: Retail stores use Bluetooth beacons to track customers

This is rage inducing. I went into this article thinking "ok as long as I don't have the Target or Ikea or whatever app installed on my phone, I'm fine." While that is a primary way, this needs to be outlawed:

> These companies take their beacon tracking code and bundle it into a toolkit developers can use. The makers of many popular apps, such as those for news or weather updates, insert these toolkits into their apps. They might be paid by the beacon companies or receive other benefits...

Ban this, full stop, on both ends of this transaction. The Reveal Medias and the scummy app devs using their ~~SDKs~~ trojan horses. At the very least these apps need to be named and shamed, I find this fraudulent and extremely difficult for end users to police.

I have very minor hope that Apple at least will one day shine light on this or ban apps who are not transparent about the data they're sending and to whom, as it doesn't conflict with their business model and they seem to be moving there. For now I have to essentially disable bluetooth when I get out of my car.
