on: Samsung is paying $350M for audio brands B&W, Denon, Marantz and Polk
I have a Philips TV with awful sound connected to a Marantz NR1200 2.1 AV receiver. More than happy with it, handles all my audio needs and has so many inputs I don't think I'll need to replace it anytime soon.

on: Google Pixel 4a's old firmware is gone, trapping users on buggy battery update
Replaced my 4a with a similar sized Moto Edge 30 Neo. Overall, much better hardware quality. I had a warranty replacement for the 4a due to cracks around the headphone jack, also happened to the replacement but that wasn't replaced.
The Moto was half the price of the 4a and is still receiving updates.

on: Waverley, the last seagoing paddle steamer
I grew up in Helensburgh, one of the Waverley's stops on the Clyde. Went on it many times including a memorable trip 'up the watter' to the Glasgow Garden Festival with the rest of my secondary school.
Had an impression on me when I first went on it and still does whenever I see it.

on: Celebrating the first NES Tetris game crash
I had an RG35xx but it's now replaced with a Powkiddy RGB30. A fantastic device for retro gaming due to its great 1:1 screen which covers so many aspect ratios. Also, a perfect device for Pico-8.

I have no problem paying for content but I don't want to be restricted in the ways that I can view it.

on: GM says it's dropping Apple CarPlay and Android Auto because they're unsafe
VW Passat 2019 is very good with Android Auto and Carplay, now that I've got it connected.
Pixel 4a needed a specific cable which did not work with a Pixel 6a. No cable worked so I now use a Motorola wireless connector and it works well with both phones.

I read purchased ebooks with DRM stripped in Calibre on a jailbroken Kindle with KOreader.

on: Ask HN: What's your seniority, location and notice period?
Wasn't a problem for me as it seemed to be normal for my role and location. Recruiters that I spoke to didn't say it was a problem.

on: Ask HN: What's your seniority, location and notice period?
Not unusual for Germany at all. I had six months notice from the end of a quarter at my previous company.

on: The quest for a simple smartwatch
I went on the same quest after the battery on my Fossil Sport died. Settled on slightly used Withings Steel HR which can be picked up on eBay quite cheaply compared to new.
It has everything I need: notifications, great battery life and traditional watch looks.

on: TomTom’s new mapping platform and ecosystem
My last TomTom device was from a few years ago and it wasn't that great. Slow, low resolution display and updates took hours to apply.
I now use the TomTom Android app and it's better than any other app or device I have used. Good maps, with clear instructions and great traffic information.
