Which, as I said, would be at least another year away.

My response was to you bringing up the topic of security so I simply addressed that with details of Ubuntus LTS. Other than that there would be no reason to upgrade however even then you could update any software package found to have security issues on an individual basis through PPA, debs or source. That is the flexibility of opensource.

No operating system can be supported forever but funnily enough Ubuntu have just announced an extension to 5 years for 12.04 LTS.

cas | 14 years ago | on: Unity is the end of Ubuntu

Why do that when 11.04 is supported until the end of 2012 and 10.04 would only extend that by 6 months.

A lot can happen in a year and I'm sure someone will create a flavour of Ubuntu to you liking based on 12.04 LTS.

1. Personally I click on the launcher more that use alt-tab these days. However there is a new key combo Alt-` as shown here: http://youtu.be/XHFNnygpvcM

2. You could set the Launcher to Autohide

3. Middle mouse on the launcher icon for another window.

cas | 14 years ago | on: The 10 Biggest Surprises about Amazon’s New Kindles

Totally agree and most of these are not surprises as they were discussed in the presentation about the Kindle.

I think the lack of power adapter is a good thing since it uses the same micro-usb that has been standardised for phones so I already own a power adapter. In fact I could even do without another usb cable.

Also the Kindle Fire being sold at a loss is only based on analyst estimates and last time I checked about this it was only a $10 difference. So doesn't seem to take into account any discounts Amazon could negotiate with suppliers for large volumes.

Edit: Just to reinforce my previous comment I just found an EETimes article reporting that Amazon could be making $50 profit for the BoM on each Kindle Fire. http://www.eetimes.com/electronics-news/4228505/Kindle-Fire-...

cas | 15 years ago | on: Putting on the Brakes: Mankind Nears the End of the Age of Speed

Bit odd that the article doesn't mention the current research into scramjets (Mach 5+) or the Bloodhound SSC land speed record project (~1000mph).

Edit: Forgot to add the continued advancement of high speed trains (~360mph) and the Vactrain concept.

So we trust no-one? There is a healthy level of scepticism but I think you are taking it a bit far.

The data is what has been actually recorded by Tepco and others and is certainly reported in good detail without being fudged or sensationalised like the mainstream media is doing.

cas | 15 years ago | on: Japan's ocean radiation hits 7.5 million times legal limit

This is especially true if the government requires zero radioactive material to appear in the sea water. So any accidental discharge is going to have some scary multiplier over the near zero levels.

The media also seem to also like the Becquerel scale along with cm³ instead of m³ to make the numbers extra scary.

I found an interesting article that describes some safe levels and also the calculation of Becquerel to Sieverts. http://mdn.mainichi.jp/mdnnews/news/20110321p2a00m0na006000c...

Considering that KeePass 2.14 is significantly better and runs nicely with mono on Linux, I don't see the need for this news item.

cas | 15 years ago | on: Linux and Reliability

I have used Ubuntu Desktop (Lucid & Maverick) everyday for years now and certainly don't have any stability issues, I don't see how changing to Mint (based heavily on Ubuntu) would affect stability.

I also have to ask what is this immature software as default you talk about?

cas | 15 years ago | on: Red Bull and Beer Diet: Day 1

I agree with the sentiment on fad diets however these drinks both contain drugs and put your health at risk from potential caffeine or alcohol poisoning. This experiment will also certainly ruin your sleep.

The simple rule for the consumption of food or drugs is moderation.

cas | 16 years ago | on: Ask HN: Which vitamin supplements do you take?

There is a lot of scientific research that shows that a balanced diet is all that is required to provide all the vitamins the body requires and that supplements at best are a waste of money and at worst in large doses can cause harm.

The only exception would be for people that have specific conditions that a doctor suggests supplements for.

Edit: I though i would add one example i read recently about Omega 3 that really stands out: http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg20627601.400-omega3-fi...
