Potential reason is that they need see how their tests affect screen burn. They mention they specifically need Mac hardware so this could be why they specifically need retina screens.

For those interested in getting a sub 60 second solve time then try learning CFOP. http://badmephisto.com has some very good resources to get you started.

With more practice and learning the correct algorithms then a sub 15 second solve is achievable.

CFOP stands for (C) = Cross = Cross on bottom layer - (F) = F2L = First 2 Layers = Solve bottom two layer edge and corner pieces at once - (O) = OLL = Orient last layer - (P) = PLL = Permute last layer

I don't understand why a user would access a randomly created directory that is only mentioned in the robots.txt file. Can you explain as to why you'd think they'd stumble across this?

comeonnow | 11 years ago | on: Ask HN: Ok to ask retainer fee for being avail during office hours?

How about instead you discussu a SLA (Service Level Agreement). For example you agree that emails / calls are to be acknowledged or responded within 1 hour during 9-5 Mon-Fri for £/$XXX per month.

You could go a step further any have different levels, so for a higher monthly rate you'd respond within 30 minutes, etc etc.

Any idea on who is responsible for this micro-site?

I find it strange that there's no information on the author, sources, references, attribution, or credits on the page at all (other than the WordPress theme attribution).

comeonnow | 11 years ago | on: How the iPad Went from Massive to ‘Meh’ in 5 Short Years

In a way I'm in a pretty similar situation. I have a desktop for my day job, and an iPad mini 1 (1st gen) for evening browsing (so that I don't get sucked into work if I use the desktop machine).

There's been 3 updates to the iPad mini since mine, and felt zero need to upgrade. I'm very happy with my ipad, and most certaintly don't think it's meh, it's just apart of my evening cycle that I don't even think about any more.

Totally, but in terms of readability for proof on concept, I can see why the author chose PHP. I think the repo was more for showing the vulnerability rather than an actual tool that could be used right out the box.

comeonnow | 11 years ago | on: iPad Mini 3

There wasn't a real update other than the TouchID, why would they update the iPad Air but not the Mini, in terms of chips and cameras?

comeonnow | 11 years ago | on: iPad Mini 3

I for one was hoping for an upgrade to this range in particular, and the fleeting mention in the stream was a bit shocking.

I have the 1st Gen mini, and didn't see enough to upgrade to the retina, and was hoping for a chip upgrade and camera upgrade, but alas nothing.

I almost feel as if there are 2 outcomes here; 1) the mini gets an update in March-ish and has some kind of A8Y chip especially for the mini, or 2) that is the last update we ever see for the mini

comeonnow | 11 years ago | on: Hacker News API

I built a scraper around 3 years ago (been through a few usernames since then), and I've had to change it once 3 months ago because the HTML output added quotes around HTML attributes.

Even though it's read only, I'll continue to use my scraper rather than the API simple because it's one request, rather than the API would require one request for the top IDs and then one call per story, so it would be 31 calls instead of just 1.

Unless I'm missing something, it seems fairly poorly designed for top stories, and non existent for new stories.

------

EDIT: Looks like I missed the text about updating to a new rendering system in 3 weeks time, and to iterate designs faster to allow mobile friendly theming. Looks Like I WILL be updating to use the API

comeonnow | 11 years ago | on: Mou 1.0 coming early 2015

I agree, in its current form I don't have any issues regarding bugs or stability, but assuming Yosemite support will be needed some time soon, as well as potentially a Mac App Store integration.

Other than that, I'd say it's a good candidate for a 1.0.0 release, so I'm not sure exactly what the need for $20k is, unless it's to reimburse for time already spent?

comeonnow | 11 years ago | on: Mou 1.0 coming early 2015

I've used Mou since very early on, and have donated to the developer also. I use Mou every single day, without fail, and so glad to see that it's getting attention again.

My only issue is that the app has been fairly dormant for several months, maybe even up to a year, and I'm not sure what's prompted the urgency to finish and release Mou. It's come such a long way gradually and I hope it isn't rushed at the end.

I also hope it'll be taken in the same direction as originally intended, rather than to extract every last penny out of it. Of course, it's great to see Chen getting the sales he deserves, but I really hope he keeps in mind his original vision.

Looks like that page was added after my comment, and before yours. Google Cache shows the link in the footer not present 3 days ago. [1]

Also, I notice you've only ever commented on 3 different HN topics all of which relate to this service, so I'm going to hazard a guess and say you're linked in some way to this project, and thought you'd add the terms link, and post this comment in an attempt to discredit my comment.

comeonnow | 11 years ago | on: Testing a way for you to make purchases on Twitter

Because it opens the doors for referrals and sponsors.

Personally I think it's a good idea, for the brands and people I follow I know I'll only be getting shown the 'Buy' button for targeted items. However, I know my friends and family follow people who are clearly paid to promote a product.

Just to give you an example, Mark Wright is a reality TV celebrity here in England, and it's clear he is paid to promote diet supplements. if you check out his tweets you'll see that he's always retweeting, and taking pics of them (https://twitter.com/MarkWright_).

At the moment, conversion metrics are quite hard to get, however imagine if each one had a Buy button. It would be super easy to see which tweets leads to sales, which in turn will lead to a more aggressive sales pitch in order to bump up your conversions and maximise on referrals, as they'd likely to change to a percentage of sales rather than a fixed fee now that conversations are recordable.

There used to be a thing that you have to disclose your affiliation (think it was cmp.ly) but don't believe it ever got enforced, much like the EU Cookie Law, kind of.

Don't get me wrong, in my feed I trust people I follow and this won't happen. But for casual tweeters, it's just too easy to be exploited.
