Addressing the "elimination of poverty" statement: Isn't poverty a relative construct? Unless full-communism is implemented, there will always be those that have less than others. For example, poor people living in the US have a much different life-style than the poor in a 3rd world country.

When I first read this post, I thought the link may be to this website: http://youmightnotneedjquery.com/ .

I developed a Cordova application recently, and I only needed jQuery for Bootstrap. All custom JS was able to be done using the DOM API. However, I was spoiled since I only had to develop against a recent webkit version (my target was iOS 7)

contactmatts | 12 years ago | on: Ask HN: How do I deal with the "unpaid overtime crowd"?

For reasons like this, I'm not sure I'll go back to a salary model (in favor of hourly model). I value my family time and personal time, but for those times where "the barns burning down", at least I'm compensated for putting out the fire.

(...And if the barn is always burning down, look for a new job.)

If someone is _solely_ working at company because their friends work there, it can be a fragile engagement. What if one or more of their friends leave, or worse, are fired?

(Notice the emphasis on solely; obviously having your friends working at a company is a plus, but should not be your complete basis for working somewhere)

I've been using Windows 8 on my laptop for well over a year, and I quite enjoy it. Especially with Windows 8.1, I just don't see how you can love Windows 7, and at the same time show an extreme displeasure for Windows 8. Have these people even used Windows 8?

IMO, the resistance has more to do with bad Microsoft PR and the anti-MS bandwagon, than flaws in the OS.

contactmatts | 12 years ago | on: Ask HN: Should I validate a client's idea?

The reason you are even asking this question on HN shows some moral obligation that you feel to do what is "right" in this case; whatever "right" may be to you. Due to this, I would present your concerns to him, and then accept the work if you feel comfortable with it.

A project like this seems to warrant an Agile approach; mitigating risk for both yourself and the client.
