datums | 16 years ago | on: Ask HN: How do you keep meetings short?

Make sure there's an agenda. Meeting can last forever, if everyone drifts from the topic that the meeting was set to discuss.

Make sure there's a timeline 45 min. You need to have an end.

See if the attendees are willing to do the meeting standing up ?

datums | 16 years ago | on: Ask HN: Anybody else quitting Facebook over privacy concerns?

Thinking about it. I don't want to have to manage my privacy setting every time FB decides that this small component of the app will be exposed to non friends on these sites. It starts becoming something you worry about and is a huge turn off. 2006 member

datums | 16 years ago | on: Never hire job hoppers. Never. They make terrible employees.

"In the last job I recruited for (our associate) I had more than 1,000 resumes"

You're doing it wrong!

BTW I don't want to employee someone who doesn't want to be there. If he wants to leave, he's doing us both a favor.

It's important to explore why the candidate wasn't happy or had leave the company.

datums | 16 years ago | on: Has the Spam War Been Won?

I think it's far from won. While we work on better ways to detect spam and faster reactive methods. Spammers are doing the same. Writing better virus, testing better social engineering techniques. It's still very profitable.

"Analysis reveals a surge in spam levels in February to 89.4 percent, an increase of 5.5 percent since January mostly due to an increase in spam emanating from the Grum and Rustock botnets. Over the past year, Grum has experienced relatively little change in spam volumes, but from February 5, Grum’s output increased by 51 percent making it responsible for 26 percent of all spam, up from its usual 17 percent. http://www.messagelabs.com/resources/press/45666

No clue.

I'm guilty of reading the article

“The encryption was highly successful in obfuscating the attack and avoiding common detection methods,”

One of the malicious programs opened a remote backdoor to the computer, establishing an encrypted covert channel that masqueraded as an SSL connection to avoid detection

datums | 16 years ago | on: Google Hack Attack Was Ultra Sophisticated, New Details Show

I'm guessing they're leaving out the "sophisticated" details of the compromise. Using encryption to hide your malware from virus scanners and using some computer "social engineering" (ssl connection) is not very sophisticated. I don't understand why it needs to be sophisticated ? because it's google ? It's known that some of the largest viruses have spread to government comuputers (sobig).

Puerto Rico was invaded by the United States. Haiti has great sadness in it's history. A large portion of their population is > 19 yrs old. There's a well known problem of child sex slaves in Haiti.
