Stop DDoS ? DoS and DDoS are 2 different animals, DoS are simple to stop.

Create an A Record for your highest queried subdomain. Those will be cached and eventually decrease the number of queries. Depending on the number of subdomain you can create and remove it on signup and cancellation.

Work on a faster way to recover from such a failure. Maybe have a read only version you can switch to "maintenance mode" ?

If you could use a cname for your MX record, what are the benefits of using ELB over what's already in place (weighted mx priorities, with the ability to relay mail away automatically on failure from AWS) ?

Also there's additional cost involved in using ELB.

I would prefer having a good dns provider, low ttl, EIP, nginx w/haproxy.

One of my most mememorable cluster fucks was recovering a database using strings on the disk. The customer ran repair table and ended up with a very small table :) . It was tedious but felt awesome actually getting a large part of the data back.
