Two in our company were on it also. Started within seconds of it opening and went through the 6-minute process 7 or 8 times. Neither of us even got to the Wallet stage.

I managed to get one last year on my third attempt but I was using multiple browser windows. They had a clear warning about that this time, so we stuck to one tab each in the vain hope that it would give us some priority or preference.

I will try again next year. The uncertainty makes it hard to plan though, given that I'm living in Ireland.

Freebies are nice and all but would happily forgo them or pay 3-4x the ticket price to be able to attend.

Could you not just disable Bluetooth on your phone for situations like that? Just curious if there's a downside.

Would love a Pebble but haven't ordered yet so I'm going to wait until they catch up on the backlog.

What I find surprising is that the download page itself contains no mention whatsoever of licensing. It lists the system requirements and has a big graphic up the top apparently attempting to upsell you to CS6 / Creative Cloud.

Would it have been so hard to say something like, 'These downloads and keys are provided for users who already possess a valid CS2 license. If you have not paid for any of these products, you are not entitled to use them.' ?

Makes me lean more towards publicity stunt.

(in reply to nirvana)

The Irish startup visa program has recently been amended to make it easier to qualify:

You now only need to invest €70k ($91k USD) to be granted residency. This is down from the old requirement of €300k.

Taxes here are quite reasonable. Corporations are charged 3.1x less tax here:

On average, UK taxes are generally higher:

And it compares favorably with the US as well:

Ireland is very pro entrepreneurship.

It's easy to set up a new company, the overhead is minimal and there are lots of financial and other supports available from government agencies like Enterprise Ireland:

We have a very low corporate tax rate and the government recently introduced R&D tax credits to encourage innovation:

Not to mention a very strong academic community, plenty of funding available for academic collaboration and the presence of a huge number of prominent US tech companies including Google, Facebook, Twitter, eBay, PayPal...

I wonder how the experience would have went if he hadn't set the desktop up for him initially. For many new users, I imagine they would be starting with Windows 8 from scratch on a new PC or a fresh install, which surely provides a guided tour and lots of hints and tips.

I still agree that excluding the Start button seems like a bad idea. Many novice users don't ever think of using the keyboard for navigation and it's clear from the video that switching back to Metro with the mouse is non-obvious.

doodyhead | 14 years ago | on: Great CEOs Must be Either Technical or Financial

He is also specific about what he means:

"Technology skills do not necessarily mean hands-on skills, though they can arise from hands-on experience. It means simply understanding the technological state of play in the environment in a way that you can make exceptional decisions.

But the skills do have to be exceptional, even if they are not hands-on."

That makes a lot of sense. Maybe I'm oversimplifying but if Windows is to Mac OS what Android is to iOS, then Android needs its DirectX to make game development easier.

The Halting Problem theoretically defines the limits of computation, but has anyone in a pragmatic, everyday coding situation actually reached that limit? In the practical sense I've never seen it have any bearing. Perhaps the problems I'm working on are too mundane.

doodyhead | 14 years ago | on: Steve Jobs' patent for the UK plug?

It seems like it's more an adapter to fit a UK-style plug into a socket that would usually only accept US-style power leads.

If you compare power adapters for laptops between the UK and the US, the UK adapters typically have a three-prong socket whereas the US ones have a two-prong socket. This patent seems to cover a UK plug that fits a US power adapter socket.

[1] "I found 4 085 giraffes created by people named Sanne!"

[2] "I found 9 988 giraffes created by people named Ediktonia!"

The actual statistic is that 2% of all Germans who submitted giraffes were named Sanne and 5% were named Ediktonia. It doesn't say they were all the same person.
