on: Protonmail was down
It seems to be related to a database intervention, but can anyone shed some light on how this results in outages in both incoming and outgoing mail servers?

Looks very cool, but what would be common use cases for this robot? Could it carry bags to base camp on everest?

This is cool! Bug: I run Postgres locally that works without a username and password. Trying to connect to the database results in the error that I didn't provide a username. Can you remove the validation?

on: Stealing your SMS messages with iOS 0day
For me the walled garden of iOS attracts me to the platform. Its apps are relatively safe, stable and curated. Sure, these restrictions might suck for you as a power user. For me, someone who makes phone calls, chats with family, takes pictures and reads the news this is just perfect. I don't need to think a lot about security because the platform thinks about it for me. For you it feels like prison, for me it feels like one thing less to worry about. For you it's ill-designed, for me it's designed for me the consumer.
I'm curious what your definition of robust is.

I’m sorry you had a bad experience, but mine was fantastic. When I had problems with my pair of Bose headphones they immediately sent new ones, even out of warranty.

on: A detailed look at the router provided by my ISP
For me, in NL, it's about 55 Euro per month for 200/200 fiber and TV (including fees and taxes). Unfortunately this increases every year in NL as well.

I used the Unifi Security Gateway to replace my ISP's modem.

I wonder how this is legal. I mean you might not be held accountable for car theft anymore, but being prosecuted for normal theft is still possible, right?

Thank you for this. Occasionally you find gems like this on YouTube. One of my favourite channels is Nik Rijavec's, who is building a house from scratch (so not a rebuild). There is something really pure and real about the way he makes his video, and is not only about the woodworking:

on: Beyond Meat and KFC partner to test fried plant-based ‘chicken’
We've been eating plant-based meats at home for a while now, but I'm contemplating going back to meats after reading various packaging. I'm seeing a lot of food additives which I don't want my kids to take in. I'm all up for plant-based foods, but it should be healthier than the meat alternative.

on: New Amazon S3 Storage Class – Glacier Deep Archive
The transfer fee for 1TB seems about $5 dollars when stored in EU, Frankfurt, for bulk retrieval (24hrs). Standard retrieval is $24 dollars (12hrs). If you'd compress all your files into one of couple zip files you will pay a tiny amount for the requests.

Looking at their vacancies, getting hired equals an unpaid position with 2-5% equity. Maybe the landlord and local supermarket accepts equity with a 4-year vesting scheme.

on: Show HN: CakeResume – Drag and drop resume snippets to build a unique resume
Awesome little tool. I like the idea of drag&drop snippets, but every list snippet has a fixed number of items. Why not one snippet with the ability to add/remove list items? Moreover you can't easily replace snippets without keeping the current information. Lots of copy/pasting involved.
